...El Nino Winter...

Nothing to spice up the Boss' vacation week like a strongly negative Arctic Oscillation and an El Nino with an active southern branch of the jet stream. There will be some interesting forecasts before we get to 2010. Strap in and let's give 'er a whirl.

WE ARE IN AN ACTIVE WEATHER PATTERN: A deep trough over the eastern U.S. means a cold and stormy pattern over the eastern half of the company. The pattern will flatten out by Monday, only to reamplify to our west by Tuesday night. This will spread rain and storms back into Alabama by early Wednesday morning. Rain and storms will increase through the day and as wind fields intensify Wednesday evening, severe weather will be a real possibility. Instability levels will be the questions, as is often the case with these winter events. Notice I said winter events, as the winter solstice will occur Monday morning. Rainfall could again be heavy, increasing our rainfall surplus even further.

FOLLOWED BY A LITTLE SNOW? As a big bowling ball of an upper low sets up to the north of Alabama on Christmas Eve, colder air will flow into the state on strong northwesterly winds. There could be a little light rain during the day, and the precipitation could change over to light snow over North Alabama by Christmas. Snow flurries will be likely through the day Friday.
Could this produce the first White Christmas in Alabama history? More about Alabama's White Christmas history on AlabamaWX.com.

WEATHERBRAINS: A special Christmas present was in your stocking last night? Did you download it yet? It's episode 205 of WeatherBrains, with retiring Strom Prediction Center Director Joe Schaefer. He gave us thirty interesting minutes Tuesday evening from his home in Norman. Our next show will on Tuesday, January 5th, when Hannah Bayman of the BBC will join the crew. Listen at www.WeatherBrains.com or subscribe on iTunes. It's free!

ON THIS DATE IN 2002: New York City's "Big Snow." New York City records its greatest 24-hour snowfall. In a 24-hour period ending on the 27th, Central Park in New York, New York, received its greatest snowfall of 26.4 inches, while 32 inches fell on some suburbs. Because the storm was not accompanied by strong winds, it was not a blizzard. Holiday travel was brought to a standstill. 27 deaths occurred as a result of the storm. Snow removal of the estimated 10 million tons of snow cost over $8 million. 19 inches of snow fell in just six hours at White Plains NY. Follow my weather history tweets on Twitter @wxhistorian.
