...More Cold Weather Ahead...

The Arctic Oscillation is a pressure pattern at the northern latitudes. It has a positive and a negative phase. When it is positive, much of the United States east of the Rockies is warmer than normal. When it is negative, colder air is able to dive deep into the eastern U.S. The AO went negative in early December, and it is expected to be off the scale on the negative side between now and the first week of January. Combining this with an El Nino pattern presents some interesting possibilities for wintry precipitation over the eastern U.S., including the Deep South. It will be interesting times in the old weather office over the next two weeks.

DRY THROUGH TUESDAY: A few high clouds will stream across the area today thanks to the upper low over the Great Lakes. Temperatures will be similar to yesterday, but maybe a degree or two warmer with a little more sunshine. A reinforcing shot of cold air will arrive tonight, holding Monday's readings to the lower and middle 40s, despite near total sunshine. Expect solid freezes Monday and Tuesday morning, with lows well down into the 20s. Tuesday will feature partly cloudy skies with highs around 50.

MID WEEK SYSTEM: By Tuesday, a surface low will develop along the Texas coast in response to an approaching trough. Clouds will spread into Alabama Tuesday night, but temperatures by morning will be near or below freezing. Precipitation will start spreading into the state during the early morning hours. It may start out as sleet or a brief period of light freezing rain before changing to rain during the day. Rainfall amounts over Central Alabama will average around an inch before it ends Wednesday night.

NEW YEAR'S: Colder air will spread into Alabama behind the departing low, but the upper trough will keep our upper winds out of the southwest. Disturbances on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day will cause occasional snow showers. Moisture amounts will be low, so it is too early to tell if there will be any measurable snow. But that possibility is on the table. We will be watching.

VERY COLD: By Saturday morning, lows will be in the lower 20s on average, with the normally colder spots dropping into the teens. Sunday morning lows will be even a degree or two colder.

ON THIS DATE IN 1998: An unusual summer storm packing winds of cyclone magnitude struck the 115 sailboats of the famed Sydney to Hobart yacht race. Six sailors died and 55 had to be rescued in a heroic air and sea effort that included night helicopter sorties to pull people out of the water. Storm warnings had been issued for the race participants, but pressure caused officials to allow the race to begin on time. Computer models did not have the resolution to show the full intensity of the storm's hurricane force winds and 30 foot seas.
