ABC 33/40 E-FORECAST

==================================================================

Yesterday's severe weather outbreak is not something you would see very
often in September without a landfalling tropical system in the mix. That
same unusually warm and moist airmass continues in place again today across
a wide area of the U.S., including the Deep South. Add in a powerful cold
front for early Fall and decent wind shear, and you have the recipe for
severe weather. It will be with us until that cold front sweeps across the
area tomorrow.

TONIGHT/SUNDAY: The approaching cold front will feature a line of strong to
severe thunderstorms as it moves into Alabama during the early morning hours
on Sunday and sweeps across the state. Due to the expected linear nature of
the storms, high winds and not tornadoes should be the main threat, although
an isolated tornado will not be ruled out.

MONDAY AND BEYOND: Dry and pleasant Autumn weather will follow in the wake
of the front, with nice conditions expected through Wednesday. Another
weather system will begin to influence our weather by Thursday, with a warm
and windy day followed by another round of showers and storms. It appears
that a squall line will affect us late Thursday or Friday with another
chance of severe weather.

TROPICS: Tropical Storm Helene is gradually losing tropical characteristics
as it moves out over the open waters of the North Atlantic. A tropical wave
about 1200 miles west of the Cape Verde islands is gradually becoming more
organized and a tropical depression could form soon. It should recurve into
the weakness left behind by all our other Central Atlantic hurricanes this
year. The long range looks at the GFS model show some nervous activity in
the tropical Atlantic over the next 12 days, but nothing that looks really
dangerous.

RECORD BIN: The low temperature at Waco, Texas dropped only to 80F Friday
morning, setting a record for the warmest low ever on the 22nd of September.
Just another indication of the warm and moist airmass that was available to
this storm system.

ON THIS DATE IN 1975: Hurricane Eloise makes landfall during the morning
hours between Fort Walton Beach and Panama City, Florida. Eloise was the
first hurricane to make landfall in that area in this century. A storm
surge of 12-16 feet accompanied the storm with a high water mark of 18.2
feet at Dune Allen Beach, Florida. Over $100 million in damage was reported
and there were four storm-related fatalities in the storm. Winds reached
125 mph sustained with gusts to 155 mph. 21 deaths were reported in the
United States. Remarkably, none of them occurred in Florida. They occurred
in the Northeast because of flooding and traffic accidents. Damage totaled
$490 million.

===================================================================

...A Rough Night...

An unusually strong late summer storm system brought a significant outbreak
of severe weather to much of the eastern United States yesterday. Strong
low pressure over the Northern Plains pulled copious amounts of warm, moist
air northward from the Gulf of Mexico. The northward extent of this airmass
was marked by a strong warm front over Alabama. West and south of the
front, the airmass became very unstable. Thunderstorms intensified in the
early afternoon as strong heating occurred through partly cloudy skies.
Strong wind shear profiles allowed the storms to organize and begin
rotating. A tornado watch was issued shortly after 2 p.m.

SIGNIFICANT SEPTEMBER SEVERE WEATHER: An outbreak of severe weather is not
something one would expect in September, but the strength of the system led
to the situation. At least 36 reports of tornadoes had been received by 9
p.m., mainly from Missouri, Illinois, Arkansas and Alabama. Several
injuries were reported.

ANOTHER DAY OF STORMS: The very strong cold front will continue to move
slowly southeastward today. More severe weather will break out ahead of the
front from the Great Lakes into Texas. We should have a sunny start in most
locations, with a little fog in areas that got decent rain More storms will
form over Alabama with the heating of the day, but we do not expect a
significant outbreak of severe weather over Alabama. The cold front will
push a line of strong storms through the state on Sunday morning, and severe
weather will be possible then. The good news is that I think that the upper
level dynamics should be lifting out to the north early Sunday, so the
biggest threat may be from straight line winds. We will keep our fingers
crossed.

MOVING FORWARD: Dry weather should be with us through Wednesday. Moisture
levels will be on the increase by Thursday, bringing back a chance of
showers and storms.

TROPICS: Helene was losing tropical characteristics this morning over the
Central Atlantic. A tropical wave about 1000 miles west of the Cape Verde
islands in the far eastern Atlantic has the potential to develop, but it
appears that it will recurve out to sea without threatening the United
States.

ON THIS DATE IN 1722: A powerful hurricane struck the northern Gulf Coast,
causing tremendous damage from Mobile to New Orleans. The newly established
capital of New Orleans was heavily damaged. This storm was also responsible
for the city of Mobile being moved to its present location from its original
site which was 27 miles north of the mouth of the Mobile River.
