...Warmer Weather...

Quite a range in temperatures across Alabama overnight. There was a
12 degree range in temperature across Central Alabama from 27F at
Anniston to 39F at Tuscaloosa. Readings will be in the middle 50s
this afternoon. Moisture levels are increasing quickly and with
dewpoints climbing through the 40s overnight, lows by morning will
barely drop below 50 degrees, if at all. Tomorrow promises to be a
mild, almost springlike day with temperatures in the 60s by
afternoon. Then Monday will seem positively springlike, with highs
topping out near 70 or a little higher. There could be a shower
overnight tonight as a disturbance passes by, but any rainfall amounts
will be very light. Showers are also possible on Monday, but things
should remain mostly dry until our next storm system arrives on Tuesday.

STRONG STORMS TUESDAY/WEDNESDAY: The powerful storm system that is
plaguing the West right now with flooding rains, heavy snows and high
winds will send a strong upper level disturbance our way on Tuesday.
This disturbance will push an area of rain and thunderstorms towards
Alabama Tuesday night. The question of the potential for strong to
severe thunderstorms has arisen. The big issue will be instability.
Will the moisture levels get high enough to support robust
thunderstorms? The shear will be there. It even will be impressive.
But the instability looks doubtful. So while we will call for strong
storms, significant severe weather does not look likely. Still, it is
a developing situation and one we will keep our eyes on.

POST FRONT: The airmass behind this system will be of
Pacific origin, so relatively mild temperatures will follow the
storms. But a longwave trough will begin to take shape over us by
late in the week and the cool down will begin. It looks like another
overrunning rain event sets up for Thursday, hopefully bringing some
decent rains to our area. The morning GFS shows another low for
Saturday. With colder air in place, it could get interesting, but no
big problems foreseen yet. Another big wet weather system comes in
around the 16th, we hope.

WEATHER FOLKLORE: The Spanish have a bit of interesting
weather folklore. They believe that the weather on the first twelve
days of January foretells the weather for the twelve months of the
coming year. For example, if January 1st dawns cool and clear, then
warms up during the day, then it rains that night, January will start
off cool and clear, warm up at mid-month and be rainy toward the end
of the month. The period is called the Cabanuelas, from the Spanish
word cabana or small cabin. The twelve cabanas house the weather.

ON THIS DATE IN 1982: This week's storm on the West
Coast has been a doozy. But an even bigger storm occurred during this
period back in 1982. Up to 25 inches of rain fell in a three day
rainstorm in the San Francisco area (3rd-5th). Snow accumulations of
up to 8 feet in depth fell in the Sierra-Nevada Mountains. A total of
thirty six people were killed and there was more than $300 million in
damage.

...Warmup Underway..

Hey. Does it seem like it has been a long time since it
snowed in Birmingham? It does seem like it has been awhile. It
actually snowed in Florida this week. Not quite measurable, but snow
flurries did fall over much of the eastern Peninsula. Learn how long
it has been since measurable snow fell in Birmingham in today's
Weather Blog.

SHOWERS BUT WARMER: The big news this weekend is the
warmer weather. With southerly winds, temperatures today will warm
into the middle 50s. Tonight, lows will only drop a few degrees to
near 50, under partly cloudy skies. Tomorrow will be positively
balmy, with temperatures in the middle 60s. And then get ready for a
tropical heat wave on Monday, with highs in the lower 70s. There
could be some showers tonight and again on Monday, but the chances
will be slight and rainfall amounts will be light.

STRONG STORMS NEXT WEEK? The storm system that is
affecting the West Coast now will swing through Alabama as a fairly
strong trough Tuesday night into Wednesday. Rain and thunderstorms
will move through the state Tuesday night into Wednesday. There is a
chance that we could deal with some severe weather, but as always,
several ingredients would have to come together. For now, instability
levels will probably be the limiting factor. We'll just take the rain
thank you. Rainfall amounts should average between one half and one
inch. Temperatures back off a bit after the cold front passes on
Wednesday, but readings will still be mild for January with
temperatures in the 60s. Look for a big cool down again by late next
weekend.

BIG STORM SYSTEM OUT WEST: That is one powerful storm
system that crashed onto the coast of the Pacific Northwest. The
central pressure in the storm was roughly the equivalent of a category
three hurricane. Hurricane force winds and torrential rains battered
northern California, including the San Francisco Bay area and
Monterrey. As much as ten inches of rain fell in some locations and
winds gusted to over 100 mph. A 107 mph wind gust was measured at
Kregor Peak. Street flooding was reported in the Reno area.
Snowfall amounts of up to three inches an hour were observed in the
Sierra Nevada Mountains. Up to three feet of snow was expected
overnight in the higher elevations. Another three feet could fall in
those locations between now and Sunday. This huge Pacific snowstorm
is great news for the Los Angeles and San Francisco, since those areas
receive much of the water supply from there. It is a storm that they
will be talking about for a long time.

ON THIS DATE IN 1998: One of the greatest ice storms in
the history of northern New England and Southern Quebec brought an
inch coating one to three inches thick across the area from the 4th
through the 9th, causing $1 billion in damage and 56 deaths. At one
point during the storm, 4 million people were without electricity.
Two weeks after the storm, over a half million people in Quebec were
still without power.

GOOD CHANCE OF RAIN BY LATE TUESDAY: It was another frosty night
across Alabama, although not quite as cold as last night. Here is a
sampling of early morning lows:

10 at Owens Crossroads
13 Cottondale, Rainbow City, Russellville, Union Grove
14 Hanceville, Ashland, Kimberly, Gadsden
15 Hamilton, Black Creek, Lincoln
16 Pinson, Mentone, Fayette

Lows in some of the larger cities included 18 at Tuscaloosa, 19 at
Anniston and Montgomery, 21 at Birmingham Airport and 29 in Mobile. It
was below freezing all the way down to the coast.

NEXT RAIN EVENT: A slight indication of a few showers late tomorrow,
but did not mention them in the forecast until it becomes more
definite. By far, our best rain event will come toward the middle of
next week and the storm total for that event may exceed 1 inch. The
time frame that we are thinking now is for the main part of the
showers, along with some thunderstorms, to come Tuesday night and
Wednesday morning. That timeline could change slightly as we get
closer to the event. As it stands today, we already show a rain
deficiency for the New Year of exactly ½ inch. Old habits are hard to
break and the long-range outlook does not promise a significant break
in the drought, although there will be occasional encouraging rain
events especially for the remainder of this winter into spring.

A SUPER STORM: That is the only name I can think of, because this
biggie off the Pacific Coast is sporting barometric pressure almost
like a hurricane west of the Washington/Oregon coast. However, the
whole Pacific Coast is experiencing some of the worst weather I can
remember with a storm like this. At midday, Walla Walla, Washington
had a blinding dust storm in progress with south winds gusting to 78
mph. There is an excellent chance that the high country along the
California/Nevada border could get over 100 inches of snow over the
next few days. The town of Truckee, California was speculating that
the snow might completely cover the train and railroad station. This
storm is so powerful that winds along the ridge tops of the Sierra-
Nevada Mountains could approach 250 mph. This will be during a time
when they will have complete whiteout conditions and getting snow by
the tons. Wintry weather will spread inland from this system into
places like Flagstaff, Arizona, Western Colorado and most of Nevada.
Paradise Ranger Station at Mt. Rainier in Washington State already has
120 inches on the ground before this storm.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: What is it about dogs and trees? I know
they like to use them as quick stop bathrooms, but Little Miss Molly
is particularly attached to a sassafras tree along the walking track.
This morning, while I was shivering in the cold, she kept me there a
full five minutes while she ever so slowly sniffed around the tree
four or five times. Then she stood on her hind legs and sniffed as far
up the tree as she could reach. I am beginning to think this is a
community message board for doggies. Maybe their version of checking
their e-mail. Life goes on. Molly makes it interesting....

...Warmer Days Ahead For Alabama..

WARMER DAYS AHEAD: A pronounced warming trend begins here in Alabama
today following the coldest air we have seen since January 2003. With
a good supply of sunshine; we expect a high today in the low 50s, not
too far from average values for early January in Alabama. The warming
trend continues into the weekend; look for a high in the upper 50s
tomorrow, followed by mid 60s on Sunday. There will be some increase
in low level moisture over the weekend, and a few clouds will show up
from time to time, but our weather should remain rain-free.

TO THE WEST: A major storm system is slamming into the Pacific coast
of the U.S. today, and will bring some big time mountain snow and
valley rain to the region through Sunday. For areas along the Pacific
coast, this storm system will bring the threat of heavy rainfall,
furious winds, rough seas, high surf and the risk of widespread
flooding. The Sierra Nevada mountains could see well over 100 inches
of new snow through Tuesday. This weather system holds the key to our
next rain event here in Alabama.

We will mention the chance of a few isolated showers by Monday and
Tuesday of next week, but it still looks like the best chance of
organized showers and storms will come late Tuesday night into
Wednesday. The storm system has the potential to bring one-half to one
inch of rain to Alabama, and maybe even a strong storm or two.

LONG RANGE: The primary American global computer model continues to
show a strong storm system affecting Alabama and the Deep South in the
January 13-14 time frame; if the model is correct some folks will be
dealing with heavy rain, while others could have their first winter
storm threat of the season. Way too early to know how this will all
work out; there is very little skill in a specific weather forecast
beyond seven days.

LOOKING BACK ON THE ARCTIC BLAST: Birmingham's official low yesterday
morning was 13 degrees; that was our coldest morning since January 24,
2003 when we dropped to 7 degrees. The coldest observation we could
find in the state was five degrees, measured by an ABC 33/40
Skywatcher in Oneonta, in Blount County. It rarely gets that cold
around here unless we have a good snow cover on the ground.

ROAMING FAR AND WIDE: Flash flood watches and winter storm watches
cover much of the western U.S. in advance of the major storm moving
inland today. Freezing temperatures were widespread across Florida
early yesterday; lows included 26 at Jacksonville, 29 at Tampa, and 31
at Orlando. Even the folks down at Miami Beach were shivering with a
low of 39 degrees. Along the Alabama Gulf coast, the low at Gulf
Shores (where the ABC 33/40 SKYCAM is located) was 23 degrees.

MILDER TREND STARTS FRIDAY: Alabama experienced the coldest
temperatures last night that we have had in a long, long time and, in
some cases, the coldest in several years. There was a freeze all the
way to the Gulf Coast, even along the beach. In some parts of North
Alabama, some ponds froze over including one at Mentone that was 11
acres. It appears that the coldest temperature around the state early
this morning was 6 above zero at Hamilton in NW Alabama. This was an
official temperature by an NWS Cooperative Observer. Here is a list of
some of the coldest temperatures. We have many more posted on the
33/40 Blog.

6 Hamilton
7 3 miles NE of Oneonta
9 Haleyville, Black Creek
10 Cottondale, West Jefferson, Bankhead National Forest
11 Attalla, Muscadine, Vinemont, Concord/Hueytown, Rainbow City,
Mentone, Heflin, Walnut Grove

In the larger populated areas, lows included 13 at Birmingham, 4 in
Huntsville, 15 in Tuscaloosa and 17 in Anniston and Montgomery and 21
at Mobile Airport

We expect another widespread freeze, but not as cold as last night.
Places in NE Alabama could see temperatures drop into the teens, but
across Central Alabama the low should be closer to 20. a milder trend
starts tomorrow and becomes more pronounced toward the weekend. In
fact, we are projecting high temperatures in the 60s for Sunday and
Monday.

NEXT RAIN EVENT: Indications are that we could see a good rain event
about next Tuesday night or Wednesday. In the more immediate future,
we should have only a few isolated showers late Sunday and some
scattered ones Monday.

OUR WEATHER WORLD: Still 1/2 foot of snow on the ground atop Mt.
LeConte in Great Smoky Mountain National Park this morning with a low
temperature of 6 below zero. The coldest in the lower 48 was 25 below
zero at Fryeburg, Maine and the warmest yesterday 80 at El Cajon,
California. It was 31 below zero in Northway, Alaska. We look with
interest at the projected precipitation amounts on the West Coast.
During the next 5 days, computerized estimates point to as much as
11.40 inches on the west slopes of the Sierra-Nevada Mountains. Now,
that is liquid precipitation. In those higher elevations, where it
will likely be all snow, some places could get over 100 inches! That
will delight the water-starved West.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: After being so terribly busy, there was
a lull in work last night while we watched the Fiesta Bowl. During
that time, at least 3 people had big ballgames with Little Miss Molly.
She had more fun than we did watching the game. I really believe that
little girl would play ball several hours a day, if we had the time
and patience to keep tossing her the balls. Some of her balls are real
soft cloth balls and she loves to shake her head vigorously with the
ball in her mouth and then sling it all the way across the room. She
goes racing after it and then comes roaring back through the living
area at breakneck speed. Life goes on.....

...Another Hard Freeze Tonight..

ONE MORE HARD FREEZE: While daytime temperatures will be slightly
warmer today (we expect a high in the low 40s), tonight will give us
one more good opportunity for a hard freeze across a large percentage
of Alabama. We expect an average low right at 20 degrees by daybreak
tomorrow, but the colder valleys will drop down into the 12 to 19
degree range once again with a clear sky and light wind. This means
one more night of taking care of people (especially the elderly),
pets, plants, and pipes.

A warming trend will then begin tomorrow afternoon as we reach the low
to mid 50s with a good supply of sunshine. That warming trend will
continue over the weekend; we should be up in the low to mid 60s by
Sunday with just a few scattered clouds around.

LOOKING FOR THE FIRST RAIN OF 2008: Over the weekend, a major upper
trough will set up over the western half of the nation with lots of
mountain snow and valley rain; that trough will move east next week,
and promises to bring the first rain event of the New Year to Alabama
by the middle of next week; at this point it looks like the best
chance of rain and storms will come during the day Wednesday. Early
data suggests we will have the potential of one-half to one inch of
rain with that system.

Out in the long range (voodoo land, as we commonly call it), the
primary American global forecast model is suggesting a good rain event
around January 13-14. But, there is not much skill in a specific
forecast beyond seven days, so that certainly isn't carved in stone.
We have even seen some model runs that hint at the potential for a
snow event for parts of the Deep South with that system. We will
simply have to watch and watch.

ALL DAY FREEZE: The official high in Birmingham yesterday was 32
degrees; the last time we remained below freezing all day was December
24, 2004 when the high was 30 degrees. We dropped below freezing at
10:00 p.m. Tuesday night (January 1), and expect to rise about
freezing around 10:00 this morning. That means we will have been at or
below freezing for 36 consecutive hours.

FLORIDA FREEZE: A hard freeze was expected this morning well down into
Central Florida; Jacksonville, Orlando, Daytona Beach, and the Tampa
Bay area all were under hard freeze warnings. This, needless to say,
will play havoc with the citrus growers. There are 40,000 commercial
growers in Florida, and all of them will be watching the weather very
closely this morning.

DID YOU KNOW? Alabama's coldest January temperature on record is 6
degrees below zero, measured on January 21, 1985. The coldest
temperature on record for any month is 10 below zero, which was
recorded on February 13, 1899.

AROUND THE FROZEN TUNDRA: Coldest spot in the nation yesterday morning
was Noatak, Alaska with 35 below zero. Coldest in the lower 48 was
Alamosa, Colorado with -25. The high in Miami Beach, Florida was only
59 degrees.

DEEP FREEZE AGAIN TONIGHT: Tonight will clearly be our coldest so far
this season. In fact, we may see some of the coldest temperatures in
about four years. We already had a deep freeze last night. The lows
tonight will average about 5 or 6 degrees colder. The very strong high-
pressure area containing this arctic cold will be moving over this
area tomorrow. This means the wind will diminish considerably later
tonight allowing temperatures to chill even more. We are calling for
an average low across Central Alabama of 15. As usual, this means that
some of the traditional cold spots may be closer to 10. This includes
such locations as Valley Head, Bridgeport, Ft. Payne and possibly even
Pinson.

A gradual warming trend starts tomorrow afternoon, but we will still
have another hard freeze Thursday night with many communities dropping
to around 20. Finally, a better warming trend starts on Saturday with
highs in the upper 50s and by Sunday the lower 60s. Our weather looks
dry all the way through the weekend.

Some snow showers moved down across NE Alabama overnight and early
today. At Mentone, on Lookout Mountain in DeKalb County, there was a
light dusting on roofs and the ground. Strong winds uprooted a tree
that fell across a truck and golf cart.
EARLY MORNING LOWS: We have dozens of cold temperatures we could
mention. Space does not permit, so check the ABC 33/40 Blog for an
exhaustive list. Here are a few examples:

15 Hamilton, Mt. Cheaha Skycam
16 Mentone
17 Vinemont, Springville
18 Decatur, Hamilton, Muscadine

In some of the larger communities, it was 21 at Jasper and Birmingham,
22 in Anniston, 25 in Tuscaloosa and 27 in Montgomery.

OUR WORLD OF WEATHER: The official NWS snow survey showed 47% of the
lower 48 states covered by snow this morning. Even in the Great Smoky
Mountains, there was 5 inches on the ground atop Mt. LeConte where the
temperature plunged to 6 below zero. Mt. Mitchell, North Carolina had
4 inches of snow and Beech Mountain 3 inches. Big snow over the
weekend over the NE with 14 inches at Wilton, Maine. Concord, New
Hampshire now has 23 inches on the ground. Burlington, Vermont has
received 51 inches of snow already this winter and Grey, Maine (near
Portland) 47 inches. Cold temperatures this morning included 29 below
zero at Alamosa, Colorado and 35 below at Noatak, Alaska. In
Fairbanks, January is normally the coldest month of the year. Their
average high is zero and average low 20 below zero. In the past, they
have been as cold as 66 below zero in Fairbanks in January 1934.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Even I, the warmest natured guy north of
the equator, put on a coat and pullover cap this morning for a half-
mile walk with Little Miss Molly. She had her bright red sweater on
and looked as cute as could be. She met the joy of her life, the
little Yorkie, on the track and they did not care how cold it was,
they stopped to check each other out and went round and round playing.
Even when we came back down the track, Molly stopped behind the little
Yorkie's house and cried for him again. She stops behind everyone's
house that she thinks will come out and love her regardless if the
temperature is 70 or 10 above zero. Life goes on.....

...The Coldest Day So Far This Winter...

BRING IN THE BRASS MONKEY: The coldest air so far this winter season
blasts into Alabama today with brisk northwest winds. Despite a sunny
sky, we will have a hard time getting above the freezing mark today,
and wind chill values will remain below freezing all day. Then,
tonight, with a clear sky and a diminishing wind, temperatures will
drop well below freezing, and a hard freeze is likely statewide. We
are forecasting an average low of 16 degrees early tomorrow, but the
actual range will be from near 8 degrees for the coldest valleys to 27
on the ridge tops. One way or another, this is pipe-bursting weather,
and you will need not only to take care of exposed water pipes, but
also bring in the pets and take care of any plants you have that will
be damaged by this kind of cold.

If we do reach our forecast low of 16 degrees tomorrow morning, that
will be the coldest temperature in Birmingham since February 7, 2004
when our low was 15.

COLD AGAIN FRIDAY MORNING: Another hard freeze is ahead for tomorrow
night, and by daybreak Friday lows will generally be in the 17 to 23
degree range. A warming trend will begin Friday afternoon as
temperatures rise into the low 50s.

WEEKEND PEEK: The warm-up will continue over the weekend; we are
forecasting mid 50s Saturday, and low 60s on Sunday. A few scattered
clouds will return over the weekend, but for now the chance of rain is
so small it really isn't worth mentioning in the forecast. A few
isolated showers could show up by Monday of next week.
FIRE DANGER: Surface dewpoints today are expected to drop into the 0
to 5 degree range; that is about as low as they go in Alabama, and the
very dry air and brisk northwest winds will mean a high fire danger
across the state today. Be extremely careful if you plan on any
outdoor burning.

ONE MORE LOOK BACK AT 2007: Birmingham's official rain total for 2007
was 28.86", over two feet below normal, and it made 2007 the driest
year on record. The previous driest year on record was 1895 with
29.00" on the books, but the accuracy of that data is very much in
question, and reliable precipitation records in Birmingham really
begin in 1904 when rain totals to the hundredth of an inch were
recorded. That year, 1904, was also very dry with only 34.32" reported.

ACROSS THE FRUITED PLAIN: The coldest spot in the U.S. yesterday
morning was Noatak, Alaska with 36 degrees below zero. The coldest
spot in the lower 48 was Alamosa, Colorado with 29 below zero. Today's
forecast high in Fargo, North Dakota is four degrees; they will drop
to near 14 below by daybreak tomorrow. About the only really warm
weather is down in the far southern part of Florida, where Marathon
yesterday reported 86 degrees.

HARD FREEZE NEXT TWO NIGHTS: This is clearly the coldest weather for
Central Alabama so far this season. This includes a hard freeze the
next two nights with the obvious protection needed for pets, plants
and pipes. The much colder air will start pouring into the area
overnight and we expect the wind chill to drop to between 10 and 15
between midnight and daybreak. There will be some scattered clouds in
the early part of the cold air invasion. We have omitted the mention
of any flurries, although a few small flakes are not out of the
question for the extreme north.

Unfortunately, we are starting a new year like most of the old one
pestered us with—a shortage of rain. We do not expect any for the rest
of the week. There could be a small chance later Saturday night and on
Sunday, but not a big event.
This is a very strong high-pressure system, which is the parent of
this very cold air. In fact, the high is as strong as many that give
us a real frigid outbreak.

Probably the most welcome news about this bitter cold is that the
visit will be short. A moderating trend will start during the day
Thursday and become more pronounced Friday and Saturday when highs
return to the 50s.

We expect the low tonight in Central Alabama to average around 20. The
wind will hold up all night, so there will not be a great variation
from valleys to hills, if anything a bit colder on the ridges. Our low
for Thursday morning is posted as 16 degrees with lighter winds. Some
of our famous cold spots, like Valley Head and Bridgeport, could be
more like 10.

Even down at Gulf Shores, the low temperature Thursday morning should
be close to 20.

AS DRY AS IT GETS: We are projecting the dew point to drop to near
zero during the day Wednesday. That is about as dry as it ever gets in
Alabama and, with brisk NW winds, this substantially increases the
fire danger.

THE YEAR THAT WAS: We will have a number of stories in the next few
days about the historic drought of 2007. It is already assured that
Birmingham had the driest year on record with 28.86 inches—a record
that has stood since 1904. Tuscaloosa also had the driest year ever,
although their length of record is much shorter going to 1948.
Anniston received only 22.39 inches, also the driest ever.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: The coldest temperature in all 50 states this
morning was 31 below zero at Alamosa, Colorado. The mountain country
of Colorado is loaded with tons and tons of snow. There are 38 inches
on the ground at Gothic. Evergreen, SW of Denver, has already received
37 inches this season and Denver Airport 26 inches.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Despite laws that say fireworks are
illegal in the city, they were really popping at midnight last night
and we have never seen Little Miss Molly so frightened. She was
shaking uncontrollably. We tried to hold her and comfort her, but she
struggled to get away and hide under the bed. We finally got her in
our big bed and talked to her softly, gave her belly rubs and stroked
her for 30 or 40 minutes. I think she knew for sure that we were
trying to help her and she finally settled down, curled up in a tight
knot and slept right next to us for the rest of the night. I sure feel
sorry for little ones when it is time to say Happy New Year with those
loud noises. Life goes on.....

...Arctic Blast For the New Year...

HAPPY NEW YEAR: The New Year will open with a blast of frigid air
rolling into Alabama from the great frozen tundra of the northern half
of North America. Winds will increase today out of the northwest,
gusting as high as 30 mph at times, and temperatures will be about 15
degrees colder than yesterday. We expect a high today in the upper 40s
for most communities, but the wind will make it feel colder. We will
begin the day with a few cloudy periods, and maybe even a few
sprinkles or flurries in scattered spots, but the sky will become
mostly sunny by afternoon.

PIPE BURSTING COLD: We are forecasting a hard freeze both tomorrow and
Thursday morning. We are using 19 for tomorrow morning, and 17 for
Thursday morning. But, we all know this is not a "one number" kind of
place, and your temperatures may vary. Actually, the spread tomorrow
morning should be pretty tight since winds will still be a factor, but
Thursday we figure some of the colder valleys across North Alabama
could be close to 10 degrees at daybreak, with mid 20s on the ridge
tops. We always stress the three "Ps" during this kind of Arctic cold:
pets, plants, and pipes. All three need attention when the weather
gets this cold here in Alabama.
We should also note that during the day tomorrow, we won't get out of
the 30s, and some communities up in the Tennessee Valley of extreme
North Alabama could stay below freezing all day.
A warming trend begins late this week, and we should be in the 50s by
Friday and Saturday afternoon. Low 60s are likely on Sunday as the
warm-up continues. At this point, it looks like most of the weekend
will be rain-free with just a small risk of a shower on Sunday. The
medium range computer model guidance hints our next decent rain event
could be more than 8 days away.

DRIEST YEAR ON RECORD: Our records here show that 2007 has knocked off
1895 as the driest year in weather history for Birmingham and Central
Alabama. The final rain total for 2007 in
Birmingham was 28.86"; the rain total in 1895 was 29.00". Here are
some final rain deficiencies for 2007: Tuscaloosa 31.19"; Anniston
29.54"; Birmingham 25.13". Needless to say, it will take many months,
and perhaps a few years, to completely dig our way out of this serious
drought.

ON THIS DATE IN 1964: Birmingham started the New Year of 1964 with a
big blanket of snow on the ground. The official total was 8.4 inches
thanks to a big snow storm that moved through the previous day,
December 31, 1963. Florence picked up 19.2 inches of snow, a record
that still stands for the state of Alabama. Huntsville measured 17.1
inches during the storm with 11 inches on the ground New Years
morning. An amazing ten inches fell at Bay St. Louis on the
Mississippi Coast. Just west of there, people in New Orleans rejoiced
to see four and one half inches of snow on the ground on New Years
morning.

BIG CHANGE TO COLDER: The change to colder will be so pronounced that
we will experience our lowest temperatures so far this season by
Wednesday and Thursday morning. This is a very strong high-pressure
system pushing down from the NW. The central pressure in that high is
expected to reach 1056mb. That may not mean much, but that is as
strong as many midwinter systems. This is how we think events will
unfold for Central Alabama.

The cold front, marking the leading edge of the colder air, will reach
us after midnight tonight. However, the real cold air will start
pouring in during the day tomorrow. Some places up in the Tennessee
Valley might fall into the 30s during the day. There is an outside
chance that we could see a few snow flurries, especially across the
Tennessee Valley and in the higher elevations of NE Alabama tomorrow
morning. They will be brief and no accumulation is expected. It will
be clear Tuesday night letting the temperature drop as low as 20
across Central Alabama and some teens in the north.

By Thursday morning, the high-pressure area will be centered over us.
We expect upper teens down into Central Alabama. Some of the NE
Alabama valleys could have lows around 14. This, of course, is our
coldest weather since last spring and it cries out for the protection
of plants, pets and outdoor water pipes.

We will have more details later, but it appears that Birmingham has
just experienced their driest year in recorded history with 28.86
inches of rain. Our average annual rain is 54 inches. It will be
interesting to see, as we get into the New Year, if that rain deficit
will continue to worsen or if we can have a new beginning. We do not
look for any rain for the rest of this week until a chance about next
Sunday. The long-range general outlook is for the drought to worsen
during 2008.

GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAINS: A real winter blast is headed for that region.
Bitter cold air will rush over the area starting tonight. Winds will
reach gusts as high as 40 mph over the next couple of days and they
could get a total of 3-7 inches of snow accumulation Tuesday and
Wednesday. By Wednesday morning, temperatures will be as low as 5 in
the mountains and 15 in places like Gatlinburg. In Western North
Carolina, in places like Boone and West Jefferson, they expect 1 inch
accumulation tomorrow with blowing snow Tuesday night as winds gust to
45 mph. They will get some lighter accumulations added. The wind chill
will drop as low as 6 below zero by Tuesday night.

NEW YEARS EVE SNOW STORM: It happened on this date in 1963. A big
snowstorm unfolded that continued well into the night and by daybreak
on New Year's 1964 as much as 20 inches of snow had accumulated at
Florence in NW Alabama. The average total across the Birmingham area
was 8 inches. Hundreds of people were stranded at New Year's Eve
parties.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Sometimes I wish I were little doggie,
especially if I could be like Little Miss Molly. I would get lots of
head scratches, belly rubs, treats, playtime, cuddling and an overdose
of naps—you name it. I would be universally loved by everyone that
came in contact with me, because I would wag my tail continuously and
greet everybody who came to the front door like they were a long-lost
friend. Since I am not a doggie, I will take lessons from the little
girl. Life goes on.....

...Colder Weather To Ring In New Year...

It's chilly out there on this last day of 2007. Temperatures fell
quickly into the lower 30s in most areas under crystal clear skies
last night. But the chilly morning readings will be deceiving today
as we are expecting a mild day with highs in the lower 60s under
mostly sunny skies. But still more changes are in store as we head
through the next 24 hours.

BEEN THERE, MIGHT AS WELL GET THE T-SHIRT: As Brian Peters has been
reporting, 2007 is set to go down in the record books as the driest
year in Birmingham weather history. As of this morning, the Magic
City has picked up 28.86 inches of rain. This is 0.14 inches less
than the bone dry 29.00 inches measured in the current record setting
year of 1895. There could be a light shower overnight, but it looks
like the record is ready to be broken. So, since we have had to
suffer through this dry and dusty year, we might as well get the t-
shirt too.

SHARPLY COLDER: Clouds will be on the increase late this afternoon as
another strong disturbance and cold front heads our way. This front
will signify a surge of significantly cold Arctic air, the coldest we
have seen since last winter. The front should arrive late this
evening, accompanied by strong northwesterly winds. Those strong
winds will be with us through much of tomorrow. Temperatures in the
morning will start off in the upper 30s. The mercury will gamely try
to struggle through the 40s, but it will be a lost cause by afternoon,
and readings will start to slip back through the 30s heading for
overnight lows that will range from the teens over northern sections
to lower 20s Central. Some of the normally colder locations will
likely slip to the lower teens. Then Wednesday will feature a still
brisk north wind with readings struggling to make it out of the 30s.
Some locations over North Alabama will likely stay below freezing
Wednesday. Lows by Thursday morning will be just as cold as those
from Wednesday morning. Throw in the winds, and we will see wind
chill values below freezing through Thursday morning.

END OF WEEK MODERATION: After a cold start on Thursday, our winds
will become easterly and our temperatures will begin to moderate.
Highs on Thursday will be in the upper 40s. Back below freezing
Thursday night, but by Friday morning, our winds will be turning to
the southeast and readings will make it back into the 50s. We should
see low 60s by Saturday and Sunday as moisture levels increase. We
will see a chance of showers by late in the weekend.

ON THIS DATE IN 1983: University of Alabama Head Football Coach
"Bear" Bryant said later that the only thing that could have spoiled
his team's chances in the Sugar Bowl against Ole Miss in New Orleans
would have been if it were to snow. Well, much to his chagrin, it did
snow the night before the big game in the Crescent City, an amazing 4
½ inches. Alabama would win the game by a 12-7 margin. The "New
Year's Eve Snow" in the Deep South also dumped an incredible 15 inches
of snow at Meridian MS, and over 10 inches at Bay. St. Louis MS. Very
cold temperatures followed the snowstorm and kept the region
immobilized for days.

...Colder Weather Ahead...

Many areas of Alabama received beneficial rainfall amounts this
morning. Generally everyone south of a line from Vernon to Double
Springs to Huntsville received at least some rain. You do not start
getting into beneficial amounts until you get into parts of Pickens
and Tuscaloosa County up through Jefferson, St. Clair and Calhoun
Counties. Around Birmingham, rainfall amounts are around one half
inch. I picked up 0.51 inches by 10:30 a.m. 0.47 inches had fallen
at the Birmingham Airport. 0.58 inches was reported by our Skywatcher
in Greystone Farms in northern Shelby County. There will be a few
more showers through early afternoon generally south of a line from
Fayette to Cullman to Scottsboro.

ON THE WEATHER MAPS: A surface front is arranged northeast to
southwest across Central Alabama from about Roanoke to Florala. One
surface low was near Roanoke on the Alabama/Georgia border. Another
was east of Pensacola. In the mid-levels of the atmosphere, a strong
upper trough was crossing the Mississippi River and rotating toward
Alabama. This should sweep the activity and frontal system on east
later today and tonight, putting an end to the rain. Before it is
over, a stripe of South Alabama from about Butler and Crenshaw
Counties northeast up to Lee County will record some impressive
rainfall amounts (2-4 inches, with isolated higher amounts.) Much of
Central Alabama will pick up between one half and one inch. Western
sections may see some clearing late this afternoon, and skies should
clear overnight tonight.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Tomorrow should dawn clear and cool across Central
Alabama with morning readings in the middle 30s. It will be a sunny
and rather mild day with highs in the lower 60s. Clouds will be on
the increase late in the day as a stronger cold front swings our way.
The front's arrival late Monday night will be accompanied by strong
northwesterly winds. Readings will bottom out in the upper 30s
tomorrow night. Temperatures will struggle to climb back into the
forties during the day with those northwesterly winds averaging 15-25
mph with stronger gusts. Tuesday night will feature the coldest
temperatures since last February. It was 20F on February 16 at
Birmingham. We will threaten that Tuesday night with average lows
around 20. Colder spots will be in the teens. The challenge on
Wednesday will be to make it above freezing, and I think locations in
the northern third of the state won't. It will be as cold Wednesday
night, with widespread teens again. Wind chills both days will stay
below freezing. This can be dangerous to anyone experiencing
prolonged exposure with no protection, so keep an eye on friends,
family and neighbors. Protect vulnerable plants and property. And
remember pets.

MODERATING READINGS LATE IN THE WEEK: We go below freezing again
Friday morning, but changes will already be underway. As high
pressure sets up to our east, winds will become southerly by Friday
morning. Temperatures will begin to moderate, with middle 50s by
Friday and readings near 60 for Saturday and Sunday. We could see a
shower by late Friday into Saturday, with a better chance for showers
on Sunday.

ON THIS DATE IN 2002: A man died when his vehicle plunged through
thin ice near Anoka, MN. The thin ice was the result of unusually
mild temperatures. 7 people had already died because of thin ice
accidents across the upper Midwest. The Minnesota Department of
Transportation reports that ice must be 12-15 inches thick to safely
support a truck, 8-12 inches to support a car, 5 inches to support a
snowmobile and 4 inches thick to support a person.

...Showers This Morning...

The weather setup over Alabama this morning is one that has produced
some significant winter storms in our past. Fortunately (or
unfortunately) depending on your point of view, the airmass over
Alabama is much too warm for snow or other wintry precipitation. Not
to say that this wouldn't probably be the best time you could have for
a round of winter weather with most folks out of school and many
businesses closed Monday and Tuesday for the New Years holiday. But
snowfans will have to wait for another opportunity.

SHOWERS THIS MORNING: A frontal wave moving along the front to our
south is spreading showers up into Alabama this morning. Folks much
above I-20 will not see much in the way of rain today, while folks
further south will have a much better chance of rain. The
precipitation should begin pushing southeastward and out of the area
later this morning. Skies will remain cloudy through late morning, but
some clearing should occur this afternoon. Highs will top out in the
middle 50s. Tonight, readings will drop into the lower 30s under
clear skies. Monday will feature sunny and mild conditions, with
highs in the lower 60s. But skies will cloud up Monday night, and
there could be a light shower or two as a strong cold front moves
through.

TURN TO COLDER: Tuesday will feel quite a bit different that
Monday. Temperatures will start out in the middle 30s, make a brave
feint into the lower 40s before much colder air rushes in and sends
the mercury into a slow fall during the afternoon. Readings will fall
back into the 30s by afternoon and there will be a strong
northwesterly wind averaging 10-20 mph. Tuesday night will feature
some bone chilling cold with a low in the lower 20s in most locations,
with several reports in the teens by morning. Wednesday will be cold,
with readings struggling to make 40 degrees. Look for low 20s again
Thursday morning before a moderating trend begins. Showers may
reappear as soon as Saturday, with rain likely Sunday. But
temperatures will be in the 60s by then.

FOOTBALL FORECAST: Lots of Alabama fans are in Shreveport to watch
the Tide take on the Colorado Buffaloes in the Independence Bowl
tonight. The weather should be excellent with clear and cool
conditions. Temperatures will start off about 48F, falling to about
42F by the end of the game. Sunday should start off cloudy in
Shreveport, but sunshine will quickly emerge and the high should be
around 61 today. Monday will be partly cloudy and mild, with highs
rising into the upper 60s.
In Atlanta, Auburn will take on Clemson Monday night. Tiger fans
will encounter a wet day today, but conditions should improve rapidly
tonight. 55 today, 35 tonight. New Years Eve should be nice, with
sunny conditions and a high of 62. Temperatures Monday night will
fall into the lower 30s, but that won't affect the game, since It is
indoors at the Georgia Dome. Tuesday will be windy and colder.

ON THIS DATE IN 2005: The 27th tropical storm of the record setting
North Atlantic Hurricane Season formed in the eastern Atlantic. It
became the second latest tropical storm ever to form in the North
Atlantic. It formed six hours before Hurricane Alice, which also
became a tropical storm on the same date in 1954. Alice actually
lasted into 1955, striking the Leeward Islands on January 2nd. Zeta
never became a hurricane, but lasted longer than Alice, lasting well
into 2006. This also tied Zeta with Alice for being the earliest
North Atlantic tropical storm on record. Alice and Zeta are the only
two tropical storms ever to cross from one calendar year to the next.
