...Another Hard Freeze Tonight..

ONE MORE HARD FREEZE: While daytime temperatures will be slightly
warmer today (we expect a high in the low 40s), tonight will give us
one more good opportunity for a hard freeze across a large percentage
of Alabama. We expect an average low right at 20 degrees by daybreak
tomorrow, but the colder valleys will drop down into the 12 to 19
degree range once again with a clear sky and light wind. This means
one more night of taking care of people (especially the elderly),
pets, plants, and pipes.

A warming trend will then begin tomorrow afternoon as we reach the low
to mid 50s with a good supply of sunshine. That warming trend will
continue over the weekend; we should be up in the low to mid 60s by
Sunday with just a few scattered clouds around.

LOOKING FOR THE FIRST RAIN OF 2008: Over the weekend, a major upper
trough will set up over the western half of the nation with lots of
mountain snow and valley rain; that trough will move east next week,
and promises to bring the first rain event of the New Year to Alabama
by the middle of next week; at this point it looks like the best
chance of rain and storms will come during the day Wednesday. Early
data suggests we will have the potential of one-half to one inch of
rain with that system.

Out in the long range (voodoo land, as we commonly call it), the
primary American global forecast model is suggesting a good rain event
around January 13-14. But, there is not much skill in a specific
forecast beyond seven days, so that certainly isn't carved in stone.
We have even seen some model runs that hint at the potential for a
snow event for parts of the Deep South with that system. We will
simply have to watch and watch.

ALL DAY FREEZE: The official high in Birmingham yesterday was 32
degrees; the last time we remained below freezing all day was December
24, 2004 when the high was 30 degrees. We dropped below freezing at
10:00 p.m. Tuesday night (January 1), and expect to rise about
freezing around 10:00 this morning. That means we will have been at or
below freezing for 36 consecutive hours.

FLORIDA FREEZE: A hard freeze was expected this morning well down into
Central Florida; Jacksonville, Orlando, Daytona Beach, and the Tampa
Bay area all were under hard freeze warnings. This, needless to say,
will play havoc with the citrus growers. There are 40,000 commercial
growers in Florida, and all of them will be watching the weather very
closely this morning.

DID YOU KNOW? Alabama's coldest January temperature on record is 6
degrees below zero, measured on January 21, 1985. The coldest
temperature on record for any month is 10 below zero, which was
recorded on February 13, 1899.

AROUND THE FROZEN TUNDRA: Coldest spot in the nation yesterday morning
was Noatak, Alaska with 35 below zero. Coldest in the lower 48 was
Alamosa, Colorado with -25. The high in Miami Beach, Florida was only
59 degrees.
