...The Coldest Day So Far This Winter...
BRING IN THE BRASS MONKEY: The coldest air so far this winter season
blasts into Alabama today with brisk northwest winds. Despite a sunny
sky, we will have a hard time getting above the freezing mark today,
and wind chill values will remain below freezing all day. Then,
tonight, with a clear sky and a diminishing wind, temperatures will
drop well below freezing, and a hard freeze is likely statewide. We
are forecasting an average low of 16 degrees early tomorrow, but the
actual range will be from near 8 degrees for the coldest valleys to 27
on the ridge tops. One way or another, this is pipe-bursting weather,
and you will need not only to take care of exposed water pipes, but
also bring in the pets and take care of any plants you have that will
be damaged by this kind of cold.
If we do reach our forecast low of 16 degrees tomorrow morning, that
will be the coldest temperature in Birmingham since February 7, 2004
when our low was 15.
COLD AGAIN FRIDAY MORNING: Another hard freeze is ahead for tomorrow
night, and by daybreak Friday lows will generally be in the 17 to 23
degree range. A warming trend will begin Friday afternoon as
temperatures rise into the low 50s.
WEEKEND PEEK: The warm-up will continue over the weekend; we are
forecasting mid 50s Saturday, and low 60s on Sunday. A few scattered
clouds will return over the weekend, but for now the chance of rain is
so small it really isn't worth mentioning in the forecast. A few
isolated showers could show up by Monday of next week.
FIRE DANGER: Surface dewpoints today are expected to drop into the 0
to 5 degree range; that is about as low as they go in Alabama, and the
very dry air and brisk northwest winds will mean a high fire danger
across the state today. Be extremely careful if you plan on any
outdoor burning.
ONE MORE LOOK BACK AT 2007: Birmingham's official rain total for 2007
was 28.86", over two feet below normal, and it made 2007 the driest
year on record. The previous driest year on record was 1895 with
29.00" on the books, but the accuracy of that data is very much in
question, and reliable precipitation records in Birmingham really
begin in 1904 when rain totals to the hundredth of an inch were
recorded. That year, 1904, was also very dry with only 34.32" reported.
ACROSS THE FRUITED PLAIN: The coldest spot in the U.S. yesterday
morning was Noatak, Alaska with 36 degrees below zero. The coldest
spot in the lower 48 was Alamosa, Colorado with 29 below zero. Today's
forecast high in Fargo, North Dakota is four degrees; they will drop
to near 14 below by daybreak tomorrow. About the only really warm
weather is down in the far southern part of Florida, where Marathon
yesterday reported 86 degrees.
