...Colder Weather Ahead...

Many areas of Alabama received beneficial rainfall amounts this
morning. Generally everyone south of a line from Vernon to Double
Springs to Huntsville received at least some rain. You do not start
getting into beneficial amounts until you get into parts of Pickens
and Tuscaloosa County up through Jefferson, St. Clair and Calhoun
Counties. Around Birmingham, rainfall amounts are around one half
inch. I picked up 0.51 inches by 10:30 a.m. 0.47 inches had fallen
at the Birmingham Airport. 0.58 inches was reported by our Skywatcher
in Greystone Farms in northern Shelby County. There will be a few
more showers through early afternoon generally south of a line from
Fayette to Cullman to Scottsboro.

ON THE WEATHER MAPS: A surface front is arranged northeast to
southwest across Central Alabama from about Roanoke to Florala. One
surface low was near Roanoke on the Alabama/Georgia border. Another
was east of Pensacola. In the mid-levels of the atmosphere, a strong
upper trough was crossing the Mississippi River and rotating toward
Alabama. This should sweep the activity and frontal system on east
later today and tonight, putting an end to the rain. Before it is
over, a stripe of South Alabama from about Butler and Crenshaw
Counties northeast up to Lee County will record some impressive
rainfall amounts (2-4 inches, with isolated higher amounts.) Much of
Central Alabama will pick up between one half and one inch. Western
sections may see some clearing late this afternoon, and skies should
clear overnight tonight.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Tomorrow should dawn clear and cool across Central
Alabama with morning readings in the middle 30s. It will be a sunny
and rather mild day with highs in the lower 60s. Clouds will be on
the increase late in the day as a stronger cold front swings our way.
The front's arrival late Monday night will be accompanied by strong
northwesterly winds. Readings will bottom out in the upper 30s
tomorrow night. Temperatures will struggle to climb back into the
forties during the day with those northwesterly winds averaging 15-25
mph with stronger gusts. Tuesday night will feature the coldest
temperatures since last February. It was 20F on February 16 at
Birmingham. We will threaten that Tuesday night with average lows
around 20. Colder spots will be in the teens. The challenge on
Wednesday will be to make it above freezing, and I think locations in
the northern third of the state won't. It will be as cold Wednesday
night, with widespread teens again. Wind chills both days will stay
below freezing. This can be dangerous to anyone experiencing
prolonged exposure with no protection, so keep an eye on friends,
family and neighbors. Protect vulnerable plants and property. And
remember pets.

MODERATING READINGS LATE IN THE WEEK: We go below freezing again
Friday morning, but changes will already be underway. As high
pressure sets up to our east, winds will become southerly by Friday
morning. Temperatures will begin to moderate, with middle 50s by
Friday and readings near 60 for Saturday and Sunday. We could see a
shower by late Friday into Saturday, with a better chance for showers
on Sunday.

ON THIS DATE IN 2002: A man died when his vehicle plunged through
thin ice near Anoka, MN. The thin ice was the result of unusually
mild temperatures. 7 people had already died because of thin ice
accidents across the upper Midwest. The Minnesota Department of
Transportation reports that ice must be 12-15 inches thick to safely
support a truck, 8-12 inches to support a car, 5 inches to support a
snowmobile and 4 inches thick to support a person.
