...Milder Afternoons...
DECEMBER STAYING ACTIVE: As of today, we are 21 days into winter. Yes, I know, the official beginning of winter was today. We pay no attention to that, because in this part of the world, December, January and February are climatologically suited to call winter. Actually, our shortest day is tomorrow, because of the angle of the sun, but it is our shortest day by a fraction of a minute.
Enough of all that—it is time to get down to the things that matter. We will go through some significant weather changes as the week goes on, including a fairly stormy Christmas Eve followed by much colder weather on Christmas Day. No snow expected, but we will get showers and thunderstorms on Thursday and a few of those storms could be strong. Starting tomorrow, we expect three days in a row with high temperatures around 60, so that should be good for your Christmas shopping. A few showers will show up Wednesday afternoon, but the main showers and a few thunderstorms will be on Thursday.
THE WEATHER MAPS: A new significant low-pressure area will start developing in the Southern Plains tomorrow. By Christmas Day it should wind up into a powerful low-pressure area centered near Tulsa or Wichita. By Christmas Eve, the intense low will be over Iowa and by Saturday over Upper Michigan. This is much different from our previous low-pressure area that took a more eastern track across North Florida and up the East Coast. It made history with snow amounts all the way from East Tennessee and North Carolina to New England. Here in Alabama, we will be on the warm side of the next system and high temperatures will shoot for 60 three days in a row. By Friday morning, the cold front will have moved through most of Alabama bringing our sharp change to colder. By that time, almost all of the precipitation will be far north of Alabama, but there could be a few snowflakes across our extreme northern counties Christmas Day.
MORNING LOWS: Here are just a few examples of the cold temperatures this morning. In NE Alabama, some of the frost looked like snow.
20 Muscadine
21 Scrougeout (heavy frost looked like snow)
22 McCalla, Pinson, Lafayette
24 West Blocton, Valley Head, Ft. Payne
25 Russellville, Moulton, Centreville, Jasper
ROAMING THE GREAT USA: 52% of the lower 48 had a blanket of snow this morning extending all the way from East Tennessee to Maine. On Mt. LeConte in the Smoky Mountains, 32 inches of snow on the ground this morning and 3 inches in Gatlinburg. One of the heaviest amounts was in the high country of the west with 288 inches at Alpine Meadows, California. Cold temperatures this morning included 8 below zero at Gunnison, Colorado and 33 below at Arctic Village, Alaska. How about Mt. Washington, New Hampshire with a temperature of 5, zero visibility and freezing fog and wind gusts to 60 mph!
MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I realize fully that the love of my fellow man and my family have to be the greatest of all, but my love for my little dog sure does rank very high. That little 9-pound creature is an ultra active bundle of hair, skin, bones, feet and a constantly wagging tail. But she came to live with us and immediately took over the whole place. We fell for her hook, line and sinker. She is such an important part of our lives that she takes up much of our conversation time and we cannot help but stop and give her a belly rub every time we walk through the house. Yesterday I took her on a very long walk and let her be the director. I did not think she was ever going to bring me home, but she had an absolute blast. Life goes on.
