QUICK CHANGES AHEAD: It was another cold night with temperatures falling as
low as 23 this morning in Hamilton, 25 in Fayette and Decatur and 26 in
Jasper, Tuscaloosa and Huntsville. It has been a sunny but chilly day, but
we will see some quick changes in our weather within the next 24 hours. Low
temperatures for tonight will be tricky and in many areas they may occur
before midnight. This afternoon a distinct warm front was moving ashore from
the Gulf of Mexico. That will bring us a quick warm up for tomorrow as highs
go above 60. We may see some light rain before daybreak, especially over the
west and NW part of the state. It could be mixed with a little light sleet
in the beginning, especially over the NW.

During the day Saturday, the rain will spread out to other areas and we
could also hear a bit of thunder. However, the main showers and
thunderstorms will be Sunday and Sunday night and a few of those could be
severe. A good chunk of North and Central Alabama could receive between 1
and 2 inches of rain from this total storm system.

The rain will be ending Monday and turning much colder. Tuesday will be
quite cold with lows generally in the mid 20s and highs not much above 40.

THE STRANGE TROPICAL SEASON: Tropical Storm Epsilon grew into a hurricane
today way out in the Atlantic some 1,200 miles west of the Azores. It was
moving NE at 14. We see little or no danger of another tropical storm
forming in the Gulf of Mexico. The water temperature at a buoy 70 miles
south of Dauphin Island is a cool 73. Hurricanes prefer much warmer.

2005 was the first season ever with 26 named storms and the first ever with
14 hurricanes. It was also the first time ever with three Category 5
hurricanes and it is the first time on record that four major hurricanes
made landfall in the USA.I have in my caffeine-stained fingers (but never
nicotine stained) the special edition from National Geographic on Hurricane
Katrina. It is available on news stands. Absolutely awesome photography.

WORLD VIEW: In the war zone, temperatures have cooled since Iraq is in the
northern hemisphere like the U.S. Highs in Baghdad for the next 7 days will
be between 77 and 82 with clear weather...some cold temperatures this
morning included 15 below at Huron, South Dakota; 35 below at Eagle, Alaska;
and 33 below at several locations in Northern Canada...over the North Pole
in Eastern Siberia, it is expected to drop to 50 below over the weekend at
Ojmjakon. That town is billed as the world's coldest continually inhabited
location.

DID YOU KNOW?: that a tornado once touched down high up in the Wasatch
Mountains of Northern Utah spewing snow 1,000 feet into the air. It happened
on Timpanogos Divide on this date in 1970. That is a pass in the Wasatch
Mountains at an elevation of about 10,000 feet. Most unusual.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Haven't heard much out of Little Miss Molly
today. She spent the entire day at the Puppy Beauty Shop yesterday getting
trimmed and also a bunch of shots. I am sure she didn't get one minute of
sleep. She flaked out early last night, even though I was trying to play
ball with her, and today she has been asleep almost continuously. We did
take an early morning walk and for the first time in about two weeks, we did
not see or hear a single old crow. We miss that very much. We only saw one
small bird who was sitting in the underbrush only 6 inches off the ground. I
did not see it until Molly went into an arced dive and tried to land on the
bird. Of course, she failed. Life goes on.
