...Comfortable Weather Continues...

An upper level trough is to the west of Alabama
this morning. Meanwhile, drier air is wedging in from the east thanks
to high pressure over New England. Here in Central Alabama, we are
caught in the middle.

OUR FORECAST: Most areas getting off to a bit of a
gray start on this Saturday thanks to low level moisture. The sun
will break through the clouds toward lunchtime. There will be a few
light sprinkles or showers across the area today, but it will be hard
to scare up measurable rainfall amounts. Highs this afternoon will be
right around 80 degrees. The small rain chances will be with us
through the overnight hours, and clouds will thicken toward morning.
Look for lows around 60F. By Sunday, the trough will begin to weaken
and the easterly flow will drop our moisture levels even further. The
rain chances will go to nil. Expect a tad more in the way of sunshine
on Sunday and highs right around 80 again. High pressure will take
firm control of the weather over the eastern U.S. as we head into a
new work week. That means dry conditions and seasonable temperatures
through the coming week. Highs will be in the lower 80s and lows will
be in the lower 60s.

RECORDS: 27F at Caribou, Maine and 31F at Watertown, New
York Friday morning were both signs of the changing season and records
for the date.

IN THE TROPICS: An easterly wave is working into the
Central Caribbean. It is accompanied by a broad area of low
pressure. Upper level conditions are beginning to become more
favorable and there is a chance that a tropical depression will form
over the Caribbean during the next couple of days as the wave moves
westward. We could see a subtropical storm form off the coast of the
Carolinas early next week. This could be a significant producer of
beach erosion, coastal flooding and gale force winds into New
England. Finally, the models are hinting at the development of a
tropical cyclone over the far eastern Atlantic this week. It would be
hard for it to make it all the way across the ocean without being
hailed by some passing trough. That's good news. We are still
waiting on Josephine, the next arrow in the quiver of the Atlantic
Hurricane season.

FOOTBALL FORECAST: Alabama is in Fayetteville to play
Arkansas this morning with an 11:30 kick off. An isolated shower or
thunderstorm is possible, which means a very small chance, and the
high temperature during the game should be near 78. Alabama State
plays UAB in Birmingham at 3:00 p.m. It should be near 78 at kick off
and about 70 at the final whistle with dry conditions. Finally, at
6:45 p.m., the LSU Tigers will be in Auburn for a key game. About 75
at kick off and 65 in the fourth quarter with only a small risk of a
shower.

ON THIS DATE IN 2005: Hurricane Rita intensified
rapidly as it passed through the Florida Straits about 50 miles south
of Key West. A storm surge of up to five feet affected the Keys,
overwashing US-1 in some locations. It was the beginning of an
astounding intensification that saw the storm deepen from a Category
Two to a Category Five storm in twenty four hours. The central
pressure in the storm would drop from 965 millibars to 897 millibars
in twenty four hours.
