...Inactive Weather Continues...

COOL NIGHTS; PLEASANT DAYS: It is truly amazing how the weather can
change so much in just a few days. Early this afternoon, I did a radar
scan of all 48 states and, at the most, I would only 1% of the USA was
getting rain. Compare that to last weekend when Ike was moving
northward into the center of the country and an old tropical
depression from the Pacific was joining up with him. All of that
created widespread flash floods through much of the Central USA, the
Midwest and even the Great Lakes.

Back home in Alabama, it was another delightfully cool morning. The
temperature dropped as low as 50 in Grantley, in NE Alabama, the
coolest weather since last April. We have a long list of morning low
temperatures on the 33/40 Weather Blog, but here are a few samples:

52 Russellville Airport
53 Moulton, Decatur, Muscle Shoals, SW Lamar County
54 Hanceville, Crossville
55 Cottondale, Hamilton, Hazel Green

50s were common over the north half of the state and even Gulf Shores
enjoyed a pleasant 63. It will be nearly that cool tonight and highs
tomorrow will only be in the low to mid 80s.

THE PESKY WEDGE: When the old wedge gets involved in our weather, I
want to run for the hills because it can destroy a forecast. For
example, this afternoon the temperature was only 62 atop Mt. Cheaha in
East Alabama with winds up to 20 mph. Visibility was almost nothing,
because Alabama's highest mountain was in the base of the clouds. It
was also only in the 60s over NE Georgia this afternoon. We are
leaving rain out of the forecast all the way through Sunday. There is
some hint we could have a few showers late in the weekend.

ALL ABOUT THE TROPICS: A drastic situation is unfolding in Galveston.
Today the mayor issued a warning of a major health crisis. There were
thousands that refused to evacuate and they are faced with no power,
no water and now even a failing sewage system. The only bright light
is weather that is not too hot and the humidity relatively low. In
fact, the dew point in Houston was only 55 today, which is very low
humidity. Dry weather should continue in Galveston and Houston until a
few thunderstorms late Friday. A tiger is loose is Galveston and
alligators were reported swimming in the flooded sections.

Elsewhere on the Tropical front, absolutely no threat of any
development in the entire Atlantic Basin, which includes the Gulf. We
have had 10 named storms so far this year, which is about where we
were last year at this time. The next storm this year is Kyle.

GLOBAL ROAMING: Anchorage had a high yesterday of only 49 and 1.22
inches of rain as their exceptional cool summer continues. USA
extremes in the last 24 hours: 103 at Indio, California and 26 this
morning at Stanley, Idaho. The weather is so quiet that the last
warning in the USA was last night from Las Vegas when flash flooding
threatened San Bernardino County in SE California.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Got a nice e-mail from a lady named
Wanda who highly recommends obtaining a rescue dog. She has one and it
has turned out to be one of the best dogs she could imagine. She found
the female dog on a highway a few weeks ago with an injured leg, mange
and scared to death. She took the dog to her vet and got everything
cleared up and now she is looking for a home. She already has a house
full of dogs otherwise she would keep Angel, the name of the rescue
dog. I have often heard that abused dogs make some of the very best
compassionate pets when they are rescued and treated right.
