FROST AND FREEZE BY MORNING: Mind you, it will not be a widespread
hard freeze, but with temperatures dropping to near freezing for
several hours tender vegetation needs to be protected including your
shrubbery that is easily damaged in the spring.
This is going to be one of those nights where there is quite a
variation in temperature. The wind may take its time tonight to go
calm, so that means the temperature may hold up fairly well until
toward daybreak.
The atmosphere across Alabama today has been cold and a bit unstable.
We have had numerous reports of sleet over the north and central
portions. Much colder air was spreading in at about 10,000 feet. This
caused some convective showers to form that produced graupel. Graupel
has been in weather terminology from day one, but rarely used. It
means soft hail and usually very small. We had a number reports of
that along with the sleet today.
HOW COLD WILL IT BE? We are calling for an average low of 31 across
Central Alabama. Up on the ridges it may be closer to 35 to 36. In
extreme cases, there may be some pockets of 28-degree lows in the
colder well-protected valleys. Places like Pinson, Valley Head,
Bridgeport, Hamilton, Ft. Payne—you get the idea. A high-pressure
system stretching all the way from Louisiana to Ohio will be getting
right over North and Central Alabama by daybreak, so we need to be
cautious about our low temperatures. By Wednesday morning, the high
should be just a bit east of us. This will allow a south wind to set
in during the day Wednesday.
THE RAIN SITUATION: We are cheerful for the amounts of rain that
many areas received during the storms Friday. Too bad it had to come
during a very scary weather event. For a time it looked like somebody
could get a significant tornado, but we somewhat bit the bullet. The
handful of tornadoes that touched down were EF0. Our next rain will
come late this week. Some widely scattered showers and thunderstorms
will enter our picture Friday afternoon and become more numerous
Friday night. The best estimate we can give on expected rain that far
ahead is about 1/2 inch average. That could change considerably by the
time the action gets here. The thunderstorms Friday reduced the
Birmingham Airport rain deficit for the year to only 0.78. Much, much
better than a year ago.
CLEANING OFF MY DESK: Lake Mead was formed by the construction of
Hoover Dam. It is a very large lake and the lifeblood for Las Vegas
and other desert areas when it comes to water needs. The lake is 110
miles long and it has a total shore length of 550 miles. A drought is
causing great concern and the lake has now fallen to about 50% of
capacity…cold spots this morning 9 below at Nuiqsut, Alaska and 5
above at Land o' Lakes, Wisconsin.
MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: The combination of weather and last
minute frantic income tax work means that Little Miss Molly has been
totally ignored today. However, over the weekend that little girl had
so many ballgames that she was at times begging for mercy. Every one
of her ballgames are just alike. She races across the living area at
40 mph off of the carpet onto the hardwood and skids out of control.
She grabs a ball and races back to me and slams it down on my foot.
Often she will spin on the hardwood, then accelerate rapidly on the
carpet. Life goes on.......
