...A Preview Of Summer...

AFTERNOONS REMAIN WARM: Temperatures will continue to run about 6 to
10 degrees above average values for mid-April for the next few days,
with most communities reaching the low to mid 80s, giving us a real
preview of summer. Today's weather will feature a good supply of
sunshine with just a few fair weather cumulus clouds around this
afternoon.

MOISTURE LEVELS SLOWLY RISE: Dewpoints will increase gradually through
the end of the week and the weekend, and a few isolated showers could
show up as early as late tomorrow afternoon or tomorrow night. Then,
we will insert a chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms in the
forecast Friday through Sunday as a cold front stalls out just north
of Alabama.

RACE WEEKEND FORECAST: At this point the chance of rain looks
relatively small at the Talladega Superspeedway Friday for qualifying;
just a few isolated showers with a high in the low 80s. Then, for the
Aarons 312 Saturday and the Aarons 499 Sunday, the chance of a shower
or storm at the track is about one in three.

Otherwise, there will be intervals of sunshine over the weekend with
afternoon high temperatures generally between 79 and 82 degrees. We
don't expect a wash-out or any severe weather.

NEXT WEEK: The latest computer model data now shows a strong upper
trough approaching Alabama early next week; this will drive a
significant cold front through here late Sunday night or Monday, with
a good chance of showers and thunderstorms, followed by noticeably
cooler air. Looks like we could drop down into the 40s by early
Tuesday and Wednesday morning.

DID YOU KNOW? The Enhanced Fujita Scale, or EF Scale, is the scale for
rating the strength of tornadoes in the United States estimated via
the damage they cause. Implemented in place of the Fujita scale
introduced in 1971, it began operational use on February 1, 2007. The
scale has the same basic design as the original Fujita scale, six
categories from zero to five representing increasing degrees of
damage. It was revised to reflect better examinations of tornado
damage surveys, so as to align wind speeds more closely with
associated storm damage. Better standardizing and elucidating what was
previously subjective and ambiguous, it also adds more types of
structures as well as vegetation, expands degrees of damage, and
better accounts for variables such as differences in construction
quality.

HEATING UP: Yesterday was the warmest day so far this year for a
number of Alabama communities. Warmest spots were Tuscaloosa and
Mobile with a summer-like 87 degrees. The official high for Birmingham
was 84; the last time we had a high of 84 or warmer was back on
October 18, 2007. To the west, Dallas/Fort Worth soared to 89, and the
hottest spot in the nation was Laredo, Texas with 98 degrees. We note
the weather isn't warming up everywhere; the high yesterday in Great
Falls, Montana was only 43; their forecast high today is 38 degrees
with a chilly north wind.
