...Strong Storms Ahead...
GOOD MORNING! Fairly deep low pressure is located over the northern
Great Lakes this morning. A strong cold front trails southwestward from the
low into northern Missouri and curves back into Canada. A strong flow of
Gulf moisture is streaming northward over the Mississippi Valley. This
return of moisture is the wild card in the prospects for severe weather
today.
SEVERE WEATHER POSSIBILITY: To get thunderstorms, we have to have
moisture and instability. To get severe storms, we need wind shear. We
will have plenty of speed shear today through a deep layer of atmosphere.
For storms to really tap the rotational qualities of that shear, we need
strong updrafts, and that takes a good bit of instability. The models
aren't too enthusiastic about the moisture return, as evidenced by their
prognostications of dew points in the lower 50s my afternoon. This could
greatly limit the prospects of severe weather. But if those dew points get
higher and a little sunshine breaks out to allow temperatures to get closer
to 70 degrees, look out.
The Storm Prediction Center has Alabama outlooked for a Slight Risk
of severe weather today. They predict that the return moisture will be
richer, with dew points between 55F-65F. We will monitor the situation
closely. Look for showers and storms to develop during the afternoon,
lasting into the evening. Some of them could become severe. The greatest
threat should be from strong winds, with the possibility of a little hail.
We can't rule out the possibility of isolated tornadoes, too. Later on
tonight, a squall line will push through the state. There will be the
threat of damaging winds with this line of storms.
REST OF THE WEEK: Tuesday will feature clearing skies. By
Wednesday, a weakening disturbance will be heading our way. We could see a
few showers Wednesday afternoon and evening. Another disturbance will slide
our way late Thursday night. The atmosphere could be cold enough for a
little light snow over North Alabama early Friday morning, but no problems
are expected at this time.
