...Dry, Mild For A Couple of Days...

This weekend looked like January. It felt like January. Temperatures in the 50s with lots of clouds and light rain. Now things will feel a little nicer for a couple of days as a high pressure ridge builds briefly over Alabama and the Deep South. Temperatures back in the 60s will feel like Spring after the coldest first 15 days of January ever recorded in Central Alabama.

RECORD COLD: It has been the coldest first half of January in Birmingham, Tuscaloosa and Anniston. With the January thaw we are now experiencing, it will be interesting to see where the month shapes up in the pantheon of coldest Januaries ever across the area. It certainly will rank very high on the list.

MONDAY/TUESDAY: Weak high pressure is building over the Deep South on this holiday Monday. Temperatures will warm to around 60 degrees today with a good bit of sunshine. More of the same for tomorrow, with temperatures running even a few degrees above today.

MIDWEEK SYSTEM: By Tuesday night, a surface low will be forming east of the Rockies. This low will be our next weathermaker, spreading clouds and showers back into the state on Wednesday. In fact, showers could develop Wednesday morning as a warm front moves north. But the main activity will come Wednesday night into Thursday morning as the low moves just to our north.

BRIEF BREAK: Skies will clear Thursday afternoon and Friday should be a decent transition day with a good supply of sunshine and temperatures in the lower 60s. But change will already be on the horizon again as a more powerful storm system takes shape to the west of Alabama.

WEEKEND SYSTEM: Our winds will turn to southeasterly and increase on Saturday as the next surface low moves out onto the Plains. Clouds will increase once again, and an area of showers and storms will move into the state Saturday night. Sunday will feature brief clearing, although clouds will build back in as the big upper low passes to the north. High pressure will build in for the next week, but another strong storm system will follow before the end of the month.

WEATHERBRAINS: Tonight, we talk about the danger of icy roads with storm chaser and photographer Dan Robinson. The panel will be augmented by Corey Anne Walton from the National Hurricane Center. Keep up with the goings on behind the scenes at the show by following us on Twitter @weatherbrains.

ON THIS DATE IN 1980: Tropical Cyclone Hyacinthe produced 223.5 inches of rainfall over the 10 day period from January 18-27 at Commerson, La Reunion Island to set the worldwide mark for rainfall from a tropical cyclone during that time interval. The same storm dumped 127.6 inches of rain in just 72 hours at Grand-Ilet, La Reunion Island. Follow my weather history tweets on Twitter. I am @ wxhistorian.
