ALABAMA ONE CALL
KNOW WHAT'S BELOW
CALL 811 BEFORE YOU DIG

Whether planning to do it yourself or hire a professional excavator,
smart digging means calling 811 before each job to find out where
it's safe to dig.

Every digging project requires a call to Alabama One Call--even
small projects like building a fence, planting shrubs and trees or
installing a mailbox.

One free easy call to 811 or 205-252-4444 at least 48 hours
prior to digging:

* Gets utility owned lines marked for free!
* Complies with Alabama Act 94-487.
* Helps prevent undesired consequences and possible service
disruptions to your neighborhood.

...Dry Air For One Day...

A BREAK FROM THE RAIN: Drier air has filtered into the northern half
of the state today, and accordingly we have not mentioned any
significant chance of rain today; we believe any showers and storms
should be limited to South Alabama. With dewpoints in the 50s, the
humidity values will be lower, and the sky should become partly sunny
after some morning clouds. But, moist air is not too far away, and it
will return to North Alabama late tonight and tomorrow. A few
scattered showers and storms are possible as early as tomorrow
afternoon.

THE REST OF THE WEEK: Moist air will be the story for the latter half
of the week. The sky will be occasionally cloudy, and we will maintain
a chance of showers and thunderstorms on Thursday and Friday with a
high in the low 80s. The rain won't be continuous, of course, and the
sun should peek out at times. The best chance of showers and storms
will come during the afternoon and evening hours, but we can't rule
out a few nighttime and morning showers along the way. The weather
will remain like this as we begin the weekend on Saturday. But, on
Sunday, showers and storms should increase in both coverage and
intensity as a cold front approaches the state, helped along by a
developing upper trough over the eastern U.S.

Looks like another surge of drier air will work into Alabama early
next week; at this point the weather looks dry Monday and Tuesday with
lower humidity values and cooler nights.

ACROSS THE FRUITED PLAIN: Triple digit heat continues over the Desert
Southwest; hottest place in the nation yesterday was Death Valley, CA
with 108 degrees. The high in Phoenix, AZ was 103. Coldest place in
the nation was Barter Island, Alaska with 13 degrees. Just behind was
Spincich Lake, Michigan with 14. Some of the heaviest rain in the
nation was around the Ark-La-Tex region, where Shreveport was soaked
with 2.76". Quite a contrast across Alabama yesterday due to a stalled
front over the central counties of the state; the high in Dothan was a
summer-like 90, while Huntsville's high was only 65 degrees.
Birmingham's official high was 72, eight degrees below the average
high of 80.

ON THIS DATE IN 1997: A very impressive sight as a tornado developed
over the southwest side of Miami, FL and chewed its way straight
across parts of downtown. Four people received minor injuries.
