GOOD AFTERNOON: It is a dreary day across Alabama on this Saturday. It is the kind of day that I always associate with January. Of course, there are many nice January days, but this is the kind of day I think of when I think of January. At least it is mild today, with temperatures in the 60s across the area. You don’t have to go very far to find colder temperatures. Just travel about 80 miles to the northwest, or less by the time you read this, to cross a cold front. Temperatures peaked at 60F at Muscle Shoals at 6 a.m. this morning, and have been falling ever since. Dew points had also fallen ten degrees since daylight, indicating the drier nature of the air here.

SHOWERS: Most of the area picked up one quarter to one half inch of rain overnight through the morning hours. A line of showers extended across Central Alabama, just south of the I-59 corridor at late morning. Another band of showers was moving southeastward over Northwest Alabama. This line was just ahead of the cold front. The front should move down into Central Alabama by this evening, where it will stall out. The front will begin to move northward in response to developing low pressure west of Alabama. Showers will begin to increase again after midnight, continuing through the morning hours. They will continue to increase during the day on Sunday, becoming rather numerous by the afternoon into the overnight. Rain will continue into the morning hours as a cold front moves slowly across the area. Temperatures will remain steady or fall during the day.

THE WEEK AHEAD: High pressure will build in quickly behind the front, with sunny skies expected on Tuesday. High pressure will remain anchored over the Lower Mississippi Valley through Wednesday, moving east enough to allow southerly winds to kick back in. Clouds should be on the increase by Thursday, with showers breaking out over West Alabama by early Friday morning. A small area of low pressure will bring rain across the area on Friday. Saturday looks to be nice, but the southerly winds will return again, increasing moisture ahead of another in our parade of weather systems. This system will bring rain back to Alabama by Sunday.

RECORD WATCH: All the major New York City airports reported record highs yesterday, including 61F at LaGuardia and 62F at Newark. It was 63F at Dulles Airport in Washington, D.C. The mercury fell just one degree short of breaking the record at Central Park. Today, temperatures are expected to be near 60 again in New York City before our same cold front drops temperatures in the Big Apple back into the 40s tomorrow. Today’s record at LaGuardia is 61F.

ON THIS DATE BACK IN 1999: A one-day January record of 87 twisters was set January 21, according to the National Weather Service. Eight people were
killed in Arkansas and Tennessee as twisters ripped through parts of both states. Springlike weather patterns produced a record 163 tornadoes over the United States in January, the most ever for the first month of the year. The total is more than three times the previous record for January -- 52 -- set
in 1975.

ON THIS DATE BACK IN 1985: North Carolina recorded its coldest reading ever (-34F) at Mt. Mitchell. All time record cold readings were set at Jacksonville, FL (7F) and Macon, GA (6F). It was the coldest Inauguration day in history as President Reagan was sworn in for a second term during cold and wind that resulted in wind chill readings of -30F. Snow fell as far south at St. Petersburg, FL. At mid-afternoon, Key West, FL was the only reporting station in the state above freezing! Here in Birmingham, the morning low was a frigid –6. It was –8 at Pinson and –10 at Jasper. Huntsville and Muscle Shoals dropped to –11.
