...More Sunshine...

HEATING UP STARTS TOMORROW: We do not have very many pleasantly cool
July mornings in Alabama. After all, it is mid summer and approaching
what is normally our hottest time of the year. This morning there was
a distinct pleasant feel in the air all the way down to South Alabama.
Only the extreme south did not feel the lower humidity and pleasant
temperatures. Lows were in the 50s in the cooler regions of North
Alabama and even 58 as far south as Sylacauga. We list just a few of
the lows:

54 Broomtown (Cherokee County)
55 Cottondale, Ft. Payne, Hamilton
56 Moulton, Muscadine
57 Hanceville, Cullman, McCalla

We have a long list of those on our Weather BLOG. In the bigger
cities, it was 65 in Montgomery, 63 in Birmingham, 59 in Huntsville
and 69 in Mobile.
The much advertised cool front behaved almost exactly as forecast and
finally settled down near the Gulf Coast. It was stalled this morning
from near New Orleans to Mobile to Savannah. The interaction of the
front and a nervous Gulf of Mexico was causing a lot of showers and
thunderstorms across the Florida Peninsula over into SW Louisiana.
Part of that was due to a surface low over the East Gulf and Central
Florida.

Back home in Central Alabama, we expect more sunshine Wednesday and
Thursday and probably most of Friday. We have introduced a small
chance of a shower or thunderstorm by Friday afternoon, but the jury
is still out. One of our weather models has upped the chances for
Friday. Same story on Saturday—just a small chance for any one
community.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Tropical Storm Bertha is finally leaving Bermuda
alone. The center was 260 miles NNE of that island. Meanwhile, a low-
pressure area 950 miles east of the Lesser Antilles is still being
watched. It has shown little change. In fact, conditions are becoming
a little less favourable for it to develop further at this time. That
is not unusual and could change later. This one is in a general
position that it could get into the Caribbean here in the next couple
of days. That is when our attention quickly goes up.

WORLD VIEW: Let us take a quick look at Egypt today. If you were to
place that country over a map of the USA, it would cover 12.5% of our
country. Cairo is by far the biggest city. The average high
temperature in January is 68 and the average low 48. In July, the high
is 94 and low is 69—about 2 to 3 degrees hotter than Birmingham.
Amazingly, Cairo gets only 1 inch of rain per year; Birmingham gets 54
times that much.

WEATHER NOTEBOOK: Buckets and buckets of rain over SW Louisiana this
morning. Water was running 2 feet deep in some of the streets of Lake
Charles. They got over 4 inches of rain quickly. Sulphur, Louisiana
got 5 inches, mostly in 5 hours. Lowest temperature in the lower 48
this morning was 37 in Yellowstone National Park and the hottest
yesterday was 114 in Death Valley. Coldest I could find around the
world, 94 below Vostok, Antarctica.
