...Very Warm For So Early...

WHAT A DIFFERENCE A WEEK MAKES: Brisk and very warm south winds were
fanning Alabama this afternoon sending temperatures well into the 80s.
These temperatures are 10-12 degrees warmer than average for late
April. It was only three or four mornings ago that we had a little bit
of scattered light frost in the NE Alabama valleys. This weekend will
be 180-degrees different from last weekend when we had all those
tornadoes. It is the season for quick changes. There is a lot of
difference in the warmth of today as compared to the same temperatures
in mid-summer. The dew point this afternoon is in the 40s and 50s.
Translation: much lower humidity than we would experience for the same
temperatures in mid-summer.

RACE WEEKEND: Still looks great for the big race weekend at Talladega
Super Speedway. Look for highs near 88 Saturday and in the mid 80s
Sunday. While it will be a little more humid, it does not compare to
mid-summer. Also, a nice southerly breeze of 10-15 mph in Talladega
County will help.

OUR NEXT RAIN: It looks like mostly sunshine through Monday and most
of Tuesday, but clouds will increase Tuesday night and we should have
some scattered showers on Wednesday. Some of those could start late
Tuesday night.

SOUTH CAROLINA WILDFIRES: It is a tragic story, especially in the
general vicinity of Myrtle Beach. Reports today indicate the worst
wildfires in over 30 years and the wildfire at times was 40 miles
wide. At least 70 homes have been totally burned and 100 others
damaged. Thousands of people have had to flee.

MISCELLANEOUS: I rode with Bill Murray and Tim Coleman to downtown
Birmingham last night for a meeting of the Central Alabama National
Weather Association. Tim did another presentation on gravity waves and
it is going to take me quite a bit of time to fully understand those.
They have always been around, except in the early days we did not know
what to call them. Sure enjoyed seeing a number of people from the
NWS. I am still a big National Weather Service fan having worked in
the Birmingham office for 32 years. The lower 48 snow cover is down to
only 7% this morning as compared to 22% a month ago. Not counting the
Mountain West, the only consistent snow cover was over NE Minnesota,
Upper Michigan and in Northern Maine. 105 was the hot spot in the USA
yesterday. Coldest this morning was 5 at Cutbank, Montana and that was
several degrees colder than the lowest in Alaska. Checking Whittier,
Alaska again: their snow depth is now down to 76 inches.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I stepped out the door barely at the
crack of dawn this morning to get my newspapers. Every single morning
a bird starts singing in a nearby tree when he sees me and always the
same song. (He does not sing my favorite, Tumbling Tumbleweeds.) Out
back I was shocked to see two very young rabbits playfully chasing
each other in our backyard. They finally zoomed up the walking track.
I am glad Little Miss Molly was still asleep. That would almost be a
cardiac arrest for her. Not only does she not like rabbits and cats,
she does not like any creature invading her territory. Life goes on.
