...Summer-Like Weather Continues...
JUNE OR APRIL? Birmingham's official high yesterday was 88 degrees; 12
degrees above the average high of 76, and within 2 degrees of the
record high of 90 for April 23 (set way back in 1896). It is
interesting note the average high in Birmingham is 88 degrees from
June 15 through June 20, so no wonder summer is on our mind.
If you enjoyed the warmth yesterday, you should love the forecast in
coming days. Our weather today, tomorrow, and Sunday will feature
sunny warm days and clear nights. Afternoon highs will remain mostly
in the mid 80s, with early morning lows close to 60. Needless to say,
the weather will be excellent for all of the activities at the
Talladega Superspeedway through Sunday. Be sure and bring the
sunscreen; you will need it.
NEXT WEEK: Our weather will remain warm and dry on Monday and Tuesday,
but a surface front will drift down this way and bring a chance of
showers during the latter half of the week; a shower is possible as
early as Wednesday afternoon. The primary dynamics will remain well to
the north of Alabama, so at this time we are not expecting any severe
weather problems.
A WARM APRIL DAY: High temperatures yesterday around Alabama included
90 at Dothan, 89 at Pinson, and 88 at Birmingham, Tuscaloosa,
Montgomery, and Muscle Shoals. To the west, the high was 90 at Little
Rock and Tulsa, 94 at Wichita Falls, Texas, and 91 at Sioux Falls,
South Dakota. Hottest place in the nation was Death Valley, CA with 105.
ON THIS DATE IN 1908: At least 34 tornadoes touched down generally
east of the Mississippi River These tornadoes occurred from Texas to
Georgia, then northward from Oklahoma to Tennessee. The violent storms
killed at least 320 people and injured over a thousand citizens. One
of the hardest hit communties was Purvis, Mississippi, where the town
was completely leveled and 55 citizens lost their lives. At least four
tornadoes touched down in Alabama during this outbreak of severe
weather. These tornadoes were responsible for approximately 48
fatalities and at least 260 injuries. The Walker to Dekalb County
Tornado was estimated to be an F4
, using the current Fujita Damage Intensity Scale.
This devastating F4 tornado touched down near Dora around 240 pm, then
continued northeastward until it dissipated near Sylvania around 410
pm.Twelve people were killed between Dora and Bergens. Bergens was
completely obliterated. Two people were killed in Warrior, one near
Royal (Blount County) and two in Wynnville (Blount County). Fifteen
people were killed and at least 150 were injured in Albertville as
half the town was destroyed. A nine ton oil tank was reportedly
carried around one half of a mile near Albertville. A funnel-shaped
cloud swept along the entire path of the storm. The cloud was reported
to have had a bounding and whirling motion, and to have swept
everything from its path where it touched the ground.
