...A String of Sunny Days...
Dry air will cover the northern half of Alabama for the foreseeable future.
This means a strong of sunny days ahead, with hot afternoons, pleasant
nights, and lower humidity levels.
Cooler should begin to drain into the state late this weekend and early next
week, and the mercury should drop into the 60 to 63 degree range by Monday
and Tuesday morning. Some of the cooler spots could reach the upper 50s
then.
TROPICS: Tropical depression 13 regenerated yesterday in the Atlantic, and
was upgraded to Tropical Storm Lee late in the day. Lee is in the middle of
the Atlantic, about 900 miles east of the island of Bermuda, and is moving
to the north-northeast. Lee is no threat to land at this time.
Elsewhere, two other strong waves over the eastern Atlantic have the
potential to become depressions during the next day or so. The next named
storms will be called Maria and Nate.
The Gulf of Mexico is relatively quiet and no tropical systems are expected
through early next week. Sea water temperatures over the central and eastern
Gulf have cooled a bit due to upwelling from Katrina. Upwelling is the
result of wave action pulling up cooler water from below the sea surface,
and is common after major hurricanes.
POWER UPDATE: As of last night, 234,809 Alabama Power customers remained
without power, down from a peak Monday night of 636,891. The goal is for 99
percent of the Birmingham service area to be restored by the end of the day
Friday.
ROAMING: Rain totals from those in the path of Katrina yesterday included
3.35" at Syracuse, NY, 3.02" at Rochester, NY, and 2.99" at Buffalo, NY. An
F1 tornado touched down late last night near Gettysburg, PA.
