...Nice Labor Day Ahead...

GOOD MORNING! It is hard to believe that one week ago, I was on the
Mississippi Gulf Coast ahead of terrible Hurricane Katrina. It has been a
very sad week, with disturbing reports of destruction and human suffering.
It seems that relief efforts are really starting to come together now. Next
comes the long process of rebuilding.

IN THE TROPICS: By the time you read this, Maria will be a hurricane.
After a disaster such as Katrina, people along the coast become apprehensive
at the mere mention of another storm. "That thing is not coming here, is
it," they say. Maria shouldn't threaten any land areas. The are now in the
peak period of tropical cyclone activity in the Atlantic. We continue to
monitor an area of disturbed weather off the East Coast of Florida, which
could develop over time. The afternoon run of the GFS develops a weak low
over South Florida and carries it across the Gulf toward the Middle Gulf
Coast. The output doesn't make it very strong, thank goodness. It could
increase showers over our area by week's end.

THE WEEK AHEAD: High pressure will remain in control of Alabama's weather
through midweek. The large anticyclone will slide eastward with time.
Alabama will stay in a northeasterly or easterly flow for the next few days.
The wind flow will shift around to the southeast by the end of the week. In
the easterly flow, temperatures will be mild, very near normal. There could
be an increase in moisture with that flow, which could give us an increase
in clouds, but skies should remain partly cloudy for the most part. There
could be a few light showers, but things should remain dry through
Wednesday. .

ON THIS DAE IN 1996: The Space Shuttle Atlantis had to be rolled back from
its launch pad at Cape Canaveral as Hurricane Fran threatened the East Coast
of Florida. Because of the amount of time that it takes to move a shuttle
back to safety from the pad, NASA officials have to be very conservative in
their decision process. The Space Shuttles have been rolled back from the
pad thirteen times. Four of the moves have been because of tropical storms.
