...Goodbye Katrina!...

GOOD MORNING! We will not remember her fondly. It seems like all too
often lately I have been saying, "It has been a long 72 hours in Alabama
thanks to Hurricane (fill in the blank.) Alright, let's go back to the 70s
and 80s and below normal hurricane activity. Who turned on the switch and
started this mess...

KATRINA ONE FOR THE RECORD BOOKS: She had an inauspicious beginning. The
twelfth tropical depression of the Atlantic Hurricane Season formed over the
Bahamas. There was controversy right away as to whether the new low was
part of the old wave that was tropical depression ten. Katrina turned west
toward the Florida Peninsula and made landfall north of Miami Beach on the
25th of August. Moving in an unusual southwest direction, the storm quickly
cleared Florida, strengthening as she went and popped out into the Gulf of
Mexico. The storm intensified rapidly on Saturday night into a Category
Five monster by Sunday morning. Luckily, its intensity backed off just a
shade and it passed far enough east of New Orleans to prevent the much
talked about Armageddon. See how Katrina ranks in the annals in today's

REST OF THE WEEK: Conditions should quickly begin to improve this morning
across the area. Winds will gradually diminish and skies will become partly
cloudy overnight. High pressure will build in across the area by midweek,
giving us fine end of summer weather. Temperatures will be near normal
levels. The Labor Day weekend is ahead and the weather looks fine for the
weekend also. High pressure will dominate our weather right on into next
Monday. Temperatures will be normal for this time of year.

ON THIS DATE IN 1979: Hurricane David grew into one of the most intense
storms ever to cross the Caribbean Sea on August 30th, with a central
pressure of 924 mb.
