...Gradual Warming Trend Ahead...

SLOW WARM-UP: Don't look for a tropical heat wave around here anytime soon, but temperatures will be trending upward during the latter half of the week. We expect a high in the mid 40s today, close to 50 tomorrow, followed by mid 50s on Friday. The air will be very dry, and we expect a decent supply of sunshine on a daily basis through scattered clouds.

WHAT ABOUT THE WEEKEND: A fast moving impulse will bring some risk of showers to Alabama late Friday night or Saturday, but moisture will be very limited, and dynamics unimpressive, so for now we believe the showers will be widely separated. Sunday looks mostly dry with a partly sunny sky. Highs over the weekend should be in the 55 to 59 degree range; parts of West Alabama could touch the 60 degree mark for the first time this month.

We will mention a chance of showers early next week on Monday, but we should note that a fast zonal flow is setting up, and with inconsistent computer model output, the forecast confidence is somewhat low at this time.

ROAMING: 35 inches was the snow depth on Mt. LeConte in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park yesterday morning. Their low temperature was 2 below zero. There was 4 inches of snow at Cades Cove. In North Carolina, there was 20 inches of snow at Beech Mountain with a low of 3 above zero. We do not have a report from Grandfather Mountain or Mount Mitchell.

56% of the lower 48 states had a snow cover yesterday morning based on the daily NWS Snow Survey. That compares to 41% one month ago today. As recent as last week, there was 63% coverage. The average depth of the snow cover is 8 inches. That is the number you would get if you were to average hundreds and hundreds of individual reports.

ON THIS DATE IN 1926: Huge avalanche roars through the Utah town of Bingham. A total of 40 people were killed and 75 buried by the mass of snow and debris.

STORM ALERT 2010 COMES TO HALE COUNTY TOMORROW NIGHT: Our annual severe weather rolls along; our next stop will be tomorrow night at Hale County High School in Moundville. You can meet the ABC 33/40 Weather team, see some amazing Alabama weather stories, learn how to keep your family safe this tornado season, and win some cool stuff. The show begins at 7:00; be sure and get there early to get a good seat. Hale County hometown hero J.B. Elliott will be making an appearance; J.B. grew up in "downtown Havana Junction", which is about 7 miles south of Moundville.
