TWO STORM SYSTEMS IN OUR IMMEDIATE FUTURE: The first system will roll
into Alabama tonight with periods of rain and a few thunderstorms.
This is a vigorous system; in fact a tornado watch was up this
afternoon from the Mississippi Delta into the southern part of
Illnois. This watch is in effect until 7:00 p.m., and includes places
like Memphis, Paducah, and Care Girardeau, MO. Strong winds continue
to develop across Alabama in advance of the system; peak wind gusts
were in the 30 to 35 mph range across much of Alabama, and a lake wind
advisory continues in effect.

Although the Storm Prediction Center has a good part of North and West
Alabama in a slight risk of severe weather tonight, we believe the
severe weather threat here is greatly limited by the lack of unstable
air. However, storms that do develop tonight will most likely contain
gusty winds as they move through. We expect average rain amounts of
around one-half inch.

The showers and storms will end late tonight, and colder and drier air
quickly moves into the state. Tomorrow will be a sunny and cool day
with temperatures remaining below 50 degrees over the northern half of
the state.

STORM NUMBER TWO: Our second storm system will arrive Thursday night.
It will be interesting to watch the airmass change across Alabama on
Thursday; we will begin the day near the freezing mark with Polar air
in place, but warm and moist air from the Gulf of Mexico will be
marching northward during the day. For now, it looks like the most
unstable air will remain over South Alabama, which will once again
limit any significant chance of severe weather over the northern
counties of Alabama. Looks like the bulk of the showers and storms
will come from about 4:00 p.m. Thursday until 4:00 a.m. Friday. The
good news is that this system looks pretty wet; most Alabama
communities can expect one inch of rain Thursday night, and one to two
inches of rain this week counting the rain that falls from both
weather systems.

BIG TIME COLD: Coldest spot in the nation this morning was
Chalkyitsik, Alaska (we will let you pronounce this one) with 57
degrees below zero. The coldest place in the continental U.S. was
Havre, Montana with 29 degrees below zero. The leading edge of this
brutally cold air was over the central part of Missouri this
afternoon, where an amazing temperature gradient was in place. At 1:00
CDT, St. Louis was reporting a balmy 65 degrees, while only about 150
miles away, Maryville, Missouri was at 9 degrees with snow falling.

STORM ALERT 2008 BEGINS THURSDAY: We hope to see you at Oak Grove High
School Thursday night for the opening night of Storm Alert 2008. We
have a special story on the 10th anniversary of the April 8, 1998 F5
tornado in Jefferson County that killed 32 people and destroyed the
old Oak Grove school campus. We begin at 7:00… come early to meet the
weather team and get a good seat!
