...Beneficial Rain Tonight...

ANOTHER GOOD SOAKING AHEAD: Southerly winds will increase across
Alabama today in advance of a major storm system that will form to the
west. A few showers should develop this afternoon, but we believe the
bulk of the rain will come from about 4:00 p.m. today through 4:00
a.m. tomorrow. Beneficial rain is likely for all of Alabama, we
project average rain amounts of one inch, but some spots could get
more. There could also be a few thunderstorms involved, but with
stable air near the surface, severe weather should not be a problem
around here. The best chance of severe weather will be near the Gulf
coast, where there will be a limited amount of surface based
instability available.

Northwest of Alabama, heavy snow will likely develop back in the cold
air over parts of northern Arkansas, Northwest Oklahoma, Southwest
Missouri, and Southeast Kansas. The snow will
spread northeast tonight into parts of Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and
Michigan.

TOMORROW AND THE WEEKEND: The rain will end soon after midnight, and
we will forecast a clearing sky tomorrow along with cooler
temperatures; we should hold in the 40s most of the day with a cool
northerly breeze. Then, we will head down into the upper 20s by
daybreak Saturday. We will warm up nicely on Saturday, however, with a
high near 60 degrees in most locations with ample sunshine. On Sunday,
moisture will begin to return, and few showers could slip into the
state by mid to late afternoon.

MORE RAIN NEXT WEEK: We will forecast a good chance of showers Sunday
night into Monday as a warm front moves northward through Alabama.
Then, a healthy round of showers and storms is likely Tuesday
afternoon and Tuesday night in advance of a major storm system. Looks
like there will be unstable air in place by then, and strong to severe
thunderstorms could become a problem. Cooler and drier air returns to
the state by Wednesday.

DROUGHT MONITOR: Even with the good rain event back on Tuesday night,
we are still behind on rainfall this year. Birmingham's total since
January 1 is 3.31", which is about two inches (1.98") below normal.
So, even if we do receive one inch of rain tonight, it looks like we
will have a rain deficit for the month of January. Not the best way to
start the New Year for a parched state.

MAJOR LEAGUE COLD: The northern hemisphere, generally speaking, is
very cold. Coldest spot in the U.S. yesterday morning was Fort Yukon,
Alaska with 54 below zero. The low at Bottineau, North Dakota was 32
below.

OPENING NIGHT! Storm Alert 2008 kicks off tonight at 7:00 at Oak Grove
High School. See a riveting story on one of the survivors of the April
8, 1998 tornado, along with other great Alabama weather stories. We
have some really good prizes to give away, and you can meet the ABC
33/40 weather team. See you tonight at Oak Grove!
