...More Unsettled Weather...
CONFUSED THERMOMETERS: Alabama thermometers have gotten a real workout
in the last couple of weeks, running up and down the scale, making us
shiver at times and making us bring out the short sleeves at other
times.
Today is one of the milder days. This afternoon, temperatures were in
the 60's over much of North and Northeast Alabama but in the 70's down
south. It was 73 in Montgomery, 74 in Mobile at 2:00pm. Low clouds
covered much of the state and there were a few patches of light
drizzle and rain, mainly over the eastern counties. Some of the higher
elevations, such as Mt. Cheaha, were actually in the base of the
clouds with very poor visibility. On the 33/40 Skycam at Gulf Shores,
we could see sea fog rolling in.
REST OF THE WEEKEND: Some changes are ahead, including another cold
front. Probably the best news about the cold front is that we do not
see any bitter cold temperatures after it gets here. Our lowest
temperatures will probably be in the thirties Monday and Tuesday
morning, although some northeast Alabama cold spots could have around
28.
THE RAIN SITUATION: Birmingham has now received 6.06 inches of rain
this month, bringing the total for the year to 54.75". That is a
surplus of 1.69" so we will end the year avoiding a deficit. Our next
rain event is coming up. Latest model input indicates that our best
chance of getting showers and thunderstorms will be later Saturday
night into Sunday morning. A few of those could be strong. It is not
out of the question that we might see a few severe thunderstorm
warnings. But this does not look like a major severe weather threat.
The better threat of severe storms is from Northeast Texas into
Missouri this afternoon and tonight, with a slight risk shifting
eastward as far as Northwest Mississippi and West Tennessee tomorrow.
ROAMING FAR AFIELD: Would not like to be on Kodiak Island, Alaska
today where the temperature was 19 with wind gusts to 56 mph and near
zero wind chill. Coldest in the lower 48 this morning was 18 below
zero at Presque Isle, Maine. In Alaska, it was 31 below at Arctic
Village. As much as 36 inches of snow fell in Teton County in NW
Wyoming Christmas Day, with 28 inches of new snow at the Jackson Hole
ski area. Alta, Utah, got 29 inches of new snow with 74 inches now on
the ground. There is 30 inches on the ground at Bethel, Vermont.
MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: The life of Little Miss Molly has been
turned upside down lately. She seems to be really really missing not
having the majority owner here. She is in the hospital and will be
released Monday. Considerable improvement. She also wanted me to thank
the 82 people who sent her an email get well wish. The first two
nights, Molly absolutely refused to sleep with me. She jumped down off
the bed five times and parked by the bedroom door, waiting for Judy to
come in. On the second night, at 2:32am, I felt my bed shake. Molly
was getting a running start and lunging against my side of the bed to
wake me up. Away we went for a 2:32am bathroom trip. We were the only
2 humans awake at that hour for miles around (well I guess Molly is
just semi-human). Life goes on. We long for quieter times.
