...Arlene Headed North...

GOOD MORNING! The remnants of Tropical Storm Arlene are moving north over Northwest Alabama this morning. The remnant low pressure system will move into Tennessee by late morning. In its wake, weather conditions will be improving over Central Alabama.

ARLENE’S LEGACY: The first named storm of the 2005 Atlantic Hurricane Season will not rank in the memorable class. Making landfall near Pensacola, the storm packed sustained winds of only about 50 mph and a storm surge of around 2-3 feet. There have been very few tornadoes and not much in the way of flooding. Mobile picked up 4.52 inches of rain from the storm, the highest total I found across the state from official reporting locations. Still, the storm is an ominous reminder of all of the dire predictions of another busy hurricane season.

FOR YOUR SUNDAY: Heavy rain will accompany the remnants of Arlene as they move northward through West Central Alabama. The rain will mostly end within an hour or so after the passage of the center of the system, which filled in last evening. Alabama will be left in a soupy airmass with high moisture levels. Additional showers and storms will form during the afternoon across the area, and there could be a stray shower or storm around overnight.

WEEK AHEAD: Scattered showers and storms will be with us Monday and Tuesday, occurring mainly during the afternoon and evening hours. A cold front will approach the area on Wednesday, giving us a good chance of showers and storms. This rare June front will give us some nice conditions for the end of the week.

NEXT TROPICAL SYSTEM: A low over the Caribbean south of Hispaniola might be our next tropical system. It should move to near Cuba then escape northeastward over the Atlantic. The GFS hints at another Gulf system next weekend, moving northeast over the Florida Keys.

ON THIS DATE IN 1982: Famed tornado researcher Theodore “Ted” Fujita had been studying the destructive storms since 1948, but he had never seen a tornado in person until this date in Colorado.
