...Keeping an Eye on Katrina...

Katrina moved into southeast Florida late yesterday just north of Miami as a
category one hurricane. The highest recorded wind gust was 92 mph at Port
Everglades. Over 400,000 people had no power as of late last night, and at
least two deaths were reported due to trees falling on cars.

Katrina will emerge in the southeast Gulf of Mexico today, and could grow
stronger again over the warm water. We still expect Katrina to take on a
more northward component of motion over the weekend, and the latest landfall
projections are clustered around Apalachicola late Sunday night or early
Monday morning.

The forecast track then moves up through southern Georgia and into the
Carolinas. If this track is correct, the bulk of the wind and rain will
remain east of Alabama. The best chance of significant rain in our state
will come the far southeast counties, in places like Eufala and Dothan.

Once again, we stress there is always uncertainty in forecasting any
hurricane, and the current forecast track could change. But for now, there
threat to the Alabama coast looks small.

THE ALABAMA STORY: If Katrina indeed stays east of the state, we will be
pretty much high and dry for the next five to seven days. Of course, this is
August in Alabama, so you can't totally eliminate the risk of an afternoon
shower, but they should be very isolated. Highs will range from the mid to
upper 80s over east Alabama to near 90 over the western part of the state
over the weekend, near normal for this time of the year.

There is even a chance that cooler air could be pulled southward by the
middle of next week as Katrina moves up the Atlantic seaboard. Some upper
50s are not out of the question by Wednesday or Thursday morning.
