...Katrina And Her Waves...

GOOD MORNING: Do you remember the 80s band Katrina and the Waves?
They sang a feel good Summer song called Walking on Sunshine. It hit the
charts in 1985. Well, I don't want to sound rude, but I think that I speak
for all Alabamians when I say that Katrina can just take her waves
elsewhere. Unfortunately, it looks like Katrina is set on a rendezvous
somewhere along the northern Gulf Coast, quite possibly on the Alabama,
Mississippi or Northwest Florida coasts. It still also poses a huge threat
to the New Orleans area. We will be waiting and watching for the next two
and one half days as Katrina makes up her mind.

GULF COAST IN THE CROSSHAIRS: Katrina has the potential to become
one for the record books. The water over the Gulf of Mexico is extremely
warm and the amount of upper level shear is very low. Katrina should
continue to intensify today, and we actually expect a period of rapid
intensification. This could make Katrina a Category Four, possibly even a
strong Category Four hurricane before landfall.

DESTINATION? Katrina is expected to gradually turn to a northerly
course over the next 60 hours, ahead of a trough of low pressure that is
digging southeastward across the Central part of the nation. Landfall could
come anywhere from western Louisiana to the Apalachicola area. There is a
good chance that it could be in the Mobile/Pensacola/Biloxi area. This of
course would spell terrible trouble for the coastal sections of Alabama,
Mississippi and Northwest Florida with winds of over 140 mph and a huge
storm surge. Hurricane watches will likely be issued this morning.

As it nears land, it is expected to gradually recurve northeastward,
spelling potential trouble for us here in Central Alabama starting Monday..
Weather conditions will deteriorate over our area starting Monday morning,
with increasing wind and very heavy rains. The worst should come Monday
afternoon into Monday night.

NEEDLESS TO SAY: All Alabamians must pay close attention to the
latest information on extremely dangerous Katrina.
