...Sundog Warning...

SUNDOG WARNING: Have you ever seen a sun dog? You probably have, and didn't know what it was. A sun dog, or parahelion, is a bright spot of colored light on either side of the sun, at the same height above the horizon as the sun. They are caused by ice crystals in high altitude cirrus clouds. We will have plenty of cirrus clouds spreading across the area from the west today. They will be coming from a trough over the western U.S., spilling across the ridge into Alabama. The best time to see them will be when the sun is lowering the sky this afternoon.

BEAUTIFUL DAY: The high clouds will give the sky a lot of character today, but will barely dim the sun. Look for afternoon highs to top out in the lower and middle 70s. Under fair skies tonight, lows will fall back into the 40s.

FOOTBALL FORECAST: Alabama will be in Starkville tonight to play Mississippi State. Kick off is at 6:00. Expect clear weather, around 68 at the start, but in the upper 50s in the 4th quarter. Auburn will be in Athens to play Georgia tonight for a 6:00 p.m. kick off. Clear weather there also with the temperature around 65 at kick off and mid 50s by the 4th quarter. UAB is in Memphis for a noon kick off today. There it will be sunny with 68 at kick off and warming to about 75 during the game.

TRENDING TO DRIER: We had been looking at showers as early as Monday night, but recent model runs have been trending toward drier. In fact recent runs have trended later and later with the precipitation. Lots of uncertainty in the forecast. For now, we will say rain over western sections Wednesday night, but the best chances Friday into early Saturday. Stay tuned for forecast refinements.

STORM ALERT XTREME: If you're reading this early Saturday, you still have time to get dressed and get to the Birmingham Jefferson Convention Complex for our annual storm spotter training. Conducted by long time trainer Brian Peters, the learning is unparalleled in severe weather recognition. You will be out by 2:30, and get free admission to the auto show!

WEATHERBRAINS: Tim Marshall was the guest WeatherBrain on this week's show. The severe weather and wind damage expert answered questions on the EF scale, tornadoes and mobile homes, tornadoes and cars and a myriad of other topics. Listen at www.WeatherBrains.com or subscribe on iTunes. It's free!

ON THIS DATE IN 1970: Southern Airways flight 932 crashed in rain and fog on approach to the Huntington, WV. Seventy five people were killed including the Marshall University football team. On November 14, 1970, all 75 people about a charter jet carrying the Marshall Thundering Herd football team were killed when the DC-9 crashed into a rain and fog shrouded hillside near Huntington, West Virginia. The worst sports related disaster in U.S. history was recently featured in the movie "We Are Marshall." Follow my weather history tweets on Twitter @wxhistorian.
