...Tropical Problems...
BIG RAIN EVENT: Why did our friend, the Gulf of Mexico, wait until
the last minute to send us a tropical storm or hurricane? We were
having such a nice quiet season. But at least Ida is easy to spell and
pronounce. Time is running out. The season ends November 30, but it is
not against the law to have one out of season. The next name on the
list is Joaquin and then three easy ones to pronounce: Kate, Larry and
Mindy. I dare say you will not see those last three.
HURRICANE IDA: She grew into a hurricane as she moved further north
into the Southern Gulf of Mexico. We knew she
had a major obstacle in her path over the Central and North Gulf of
Mexico—namely much cooler water temperatures. When she got into that
area, she was downgraded to a tropical storm. The center of
circulation was easily visible on radar this afternoon over the North
Gulf of Mexico. Landfall is expected by around daybreak somewhere
along the North Gulf coast, probably in Mobile or Baldwin County or
maybe extreme NW Florida. Strong winds can be expected all along the
coast and even inland all the way into North/Central Alabama. After
making landfall, a sharp turn to the right is expected and by daybreak
Wednesday, the remnants should be near Tallahassee. Sustained winds
this afternoon were down to about 70 mph.
CENTRAL ALABAMA IMPACT: The further east you go, the heavier the
final rain total from Ida. But even in the Birmingham metro area we
could easily get around three inches. It will be heavier east and SE
of the city and much heavier down south. Light rain was already
spreading into the Birmingham area early this afternoon. NE winds will
reach 15 to 30 mph at times Tuesday. We can never totally rule out an
isolated weak tornado in a land-falling tropical system.
BEYOND MISS IDA: For the all-important Veterans Day on Wednesday, we
look for mostly sunny, breezy and cool weather. After that, sunny
weather should last all the way into the weekend with afternoon highs
mostly in the upper 60s.
ROAMING: After Ida turns eastward, she will evolve into a low-
pressure area along the Georgia and South Carolina coast and bring a
very windy and wet time to the lower and mid-Atlantic coast…the
warmest temperature in the good old USA Sunday was 87 at Naples,
Florida…lows this morning included 8 above zero at Pinedale and Big
Piney, Wyoming and also in Yellowstone National Park…the coldest in
Alaska was 26 below zero at Fort Yukon. That is not too far away from
Chicken, Alaska where it has been as cold as 63 below last winter. We
will watch that little hamlet closely. It has an interesting history…I
sure did enjoy an all-day outing Saturday courtesy of my son Steve. It
included the Alabama/LSU game at Bryant-Denny Stadium. Would you
believe that is the first college football game I have seen since the
first game that Mike Dubose coached. I still have never seen a college
basketball game. Maybe I need to get out more.
MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: When I got home about 10:00 Saturday
night, Little Miss Molly had not seen me for about 15 hours. She was
so happy she almost tackled me and then for hours she would not let me
out of her sight. I was too exhausted to play ball with her, but I did
anyway. She was absolutely elated. Life goes on.
