...Rain Today Should Be Light...

We will maintain the chance of a few showers across Alabama today thanks to
a slow moving cold front passing through the state. Rain should not be
especially heavy due to limited moisture in the lower atmosphere and the
lack of good upper air dynamics. Most places will receive rainfall of a
quarter inch or less. Showers should end this evening as colder and drier
arrives.

A COOL CHANGE: Temperatures tomorrow will be sharply colder; we will
struggle to reach the 60 degree mark with a very chilly north breeze. Clouds
could linger into the morning, but the sky should become partly sunny by
midday. By early Friday, temperatures will drop well down into the 30s. We
will forecast an average low of 34 degrees, but the normally colder places
should have a light freeze. Maybe even some 20s for the colder valleys.
During the day Friday the weather will be dry and cool with a high in the
low 60s.

THE WEEKEND: We begin the weekend with a clear and cold morning; early
Saturday we will be down in the 30s again. But, with maximum sunshine on
Saturday, the afternoon high will be somewhere between 64 and 68. Then,
there is a good chance we reach 70 degrees on Sunday afternoon. There is no
chance of rain over the weekend.

LONG RANGE: At this point it looks like our next big rain event will come on
Tuesday of next week as a strong system passes through the state. If the air
can destabilize enough, there could be some risk of strong to severe
thunderstorms. Then, the primary American global model, the GFS, hints at a
major storm system in the November 12-13 time frame that might bring another
chance of strong storms, followed by much colder air. Way too early to be
specific, but we will surely keep an eye on it.

HALLOWEEN SHOWERS: Showers late yesterday and last night dropped 0.37" at
Hamilton, 0.28" at Huntsville, 0.21" at Decatur, and 0.18" at Muscle Shoals.
Across the state line, the total at Tupelo was 0.30".

FEELS LIKE WINTER: The coldest spot in the nation yesterday was Valentine,
Montana with six degrees below zero. A number of communities across Montana
and North Dakota remained below freezing all day as bitter cold Arctic air
covered the region. Up in Alaska, our online weather watcher in Girdwood
(southeast of Anchorage), Todd Foisy, reported a high of 33 yesterday. In
Fairbanks, the forecast high for Thursday is 9 degrees.

FALL TORNADO SEASON ARRIVES: The "secondary" tornado season in Alabama
begins today; the fall season runs from the first of November through
mid-December; we suggest you take the time to review your severe weather
safety plan at home and at your office. The fall season has been the most
active season for the last 8 years in Alabama.
