...A Few Showers Possible Tonight...

Clouds will slowly increase across Alabama today, and a few widely scattered
showers could show up by late afternoon, especially over the western half of
the state, as a cold front approaches. For the little ghosts and goblins out
on the streets tonight, a shower is possible, but they should be pretty
widely spaced, and at this point we don't expect any thunder or lightning.

We will maintain the chance of scattered showers tonight and tomorrow as the
slowpoke front creeps through, but with only limited moisture and dynamics,
rainfall amounts should be light and spotty. Most communities will received
a quarter inch of rain or less. Then, drier and cooler air will roll into
the state on Thursday. A stray shower could be found early Thursday, but the
chance looks so small at this point we won't mention it on our formal
forecast.

With a partly sunny sky, the high on Thursday will be only in the mid 60s
with a cool north breeze. Then, by Friday morning, there is a good chance we
reach the upper 30s as the colder air continues to move in. Friday should
feature maximum sunshine with a high somewhere between 60 and 65.

WEEKEND PREVIEW: The weekend ahead looks very nice; lots of sunshine both
Saturday and Sunday with highs generally in the 60s. Saturday morning will
be cold; some of the colder valleys will see a light freeze, and some frost
is likely in the colder spots as well. Yet another good looking Saturday for
college football games across the Deep South.

WET OCTOBER: October is normally the driest month of the year for
Birmingham; our average rainfall for October is only 3.23". This year, we
have measured 4.97" during October, and we might go over five inches if we
can get a nice shower tonight before midnight. For the year, Birmingham's
rain total is 50.93", giving us a surplus of 6.16" since January 1.

BIG COLD BLAST: Some of the coldest air so far this season is invading the
northern U.S.; yesterday's high in Great Falls, Montana was only 18 degrees,
which followed a morning low of 7. Also in Montana, the high at Lewiston was
only 15. That cold air will be spreading southward over the plains states
today.

THANKS: A big thank you for watching our special on ABC 33/40 this past
Sunday evening called "A Decade Of Alabama Weather". If you missed it, we
have posted the show on the ABC 33/40 web site. Just go to the weather
section, and then click on video and look under "video vault". You will find
plenty of old video there as well from other events over the past 10 years.

STORM ALERT XTREME: Don't forget our annual severe weather training session
is coming to the BJCC in downtown Birmingham on Saturday November 11; check
the web for details. The session is totally free, and you will get the best
SKYWARN training in the nation from our own Brian Peters, who has trained
over 6,000 Alabama storm spotters over the years!
