...A Nice Sunday...

Today is going to be a nice day across North and Central Alabama. A
disturbance passing to our north will bring some clouds during the
day, and the sky could be completely cloudy for some time. But a
moderating airmass on southeasterly winds and available sunshine will
push temperatures back to near 60 degrees today. It will be the
beginning of a run of temperatures that are near normal for much of
the coming week.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Monday will feature partly cloudy skies and mild
temperatures. Skies will become cloudy Monday night. By Tuesday,
developing low pressure to the west of Alabama will cause southerly
winds to increase across the state. As moisture levels continue to
rise, a few showers will develop during the day, but the main action
should come Tuesday night. Recent runs of the GFS speed the system up
just a tad, and push a line of showers and storms into the state
during the evening hours. We still do not expect much in the way of
strong storms, but the timing is a bit more favorable if the line
arrives in the evening. We will monitor the situation. The activity
should be moving out of eastern sections by early Wednesday with some
clearing late the day. The airmass behind the cold front is not
Arctic in nature, so no really cold air is in sight. Look for a major
coastal low to develop along the East Coast by late in the week. The
GFS makes it into a hurricane force monster by Friday off the
Delmarva.

WEATHER NOTEBOOK: Did you see the news story about the tornado that
hit a London suburb on Thursday? It injured six people. Typhoon
Durian, which struck the Philippines on November 29th is now the
deadliest tropical cyclone of 2006. The Supertyphoon killed 1,226
people in the Philippines.

NHC DIRECTOR NAMED: On Wednesday of this past week, Max Mayfield's
replacement as Director of the National Hurricane Center was named.
It is Bill Proenza, long time Director of the National Weather
Service's Southern Region. Proenza is working with Mayfield and the
team at the NHC now to wrap up the 2006 season and get ready for
conferences in the Spring. Proenza's first official day will be
January 3rd.

2007 HURRICANE SEASON PREDICTION: Dr. William Gray and his team of
hurricane researchers have released their predictions for the 2007
North Atlantic Hurricane Season. They are calling for an above
average count. More in today's blog.

ON THIS DATE IN 2002: Greek Television reported that a shower of
tiny fish rained down on the village of Korona after a strong
thunderstorm. Experts reported that the unexpected bounty was
probably caused when a waterspout picked up the small fish from Lake
Doirani.
