THE ALABAMA STORY: It has historically been a long nagging problem to
determine when clouds will completely move out of the area after a cold
front passes. Today was a case in point. While much of the state enjoyed Old
Sol, clouds were stubborn over the extreme north and NE counties. Those
should gradually move away tonight.
We will not go into a great deal of detail here, but please check our
day-by-day forecast and you will see some mild temperatures all the way into
next week. Some light showers will start late Friday night and end Saturday
morning.
SEVERE WEATHER RISK: It may happen again late Sunday night and through
Monday morning. Being that far away, it is something we will put on the back
burner and watch closely. For New Year's Day, it should be a dry, mild day
with highs in the mid 60s. Those showers and storms should not arrive until
late Sunday night and Monday morning. Yesterday's severe weather was limited
mostly to areas east of Birmingham and hail was the main player. There were
a number of large hail reports in EastCentral and SE Alabama. Probably the
most significant report came from the small community of New Site on County
Road 22 NE of Alexander City in Tallapoosa County. The hail was reported to
be 5 to 6 inches deep. There were other reports of automobile windshields
being broken. Over in West Georgia, 5 miles north of Americus, hailstones
4-1/4 inches in diameter were reported. That is softball size!
FOOTBALL BOWL WEATHER: The preliminary forecast is for mostly dry weather
and a peak of 75 degrees for the Auburn-Wisconsin game in Orlando Monday. In
Dallas, where Alabama will play Texas Tech in the Cotton Bowl, mostly sunny
weather with a high near 70.
JUST FOR FUN: Let's get a bit unserious and roam around the world and see
what is interesting...we just cannot find any bitter cold in Alaska and NW
Canada...we often watch the town of Mayo in the Yukon Territory, where it
can easily get 50 below zero this time of year. This morning they were 19
above zero...over on the other side of the North Pole at Ojmjakon, Siberia
it was 64 below at midnight their time. Their high for the next couple of
days will be 56 below...Nyang Station in West Australia was reporting 109
degrees at 6 pm...amazingly no subzero temperatures in the lower 48 this
morning. The coldest was plus 3 near Gunnison, Colorado.
MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Thanks to Bill Murray for covering for me
yesterday...very little time to play with Little Miss Molly and she knows
it. She has been following me like a shadow. Every time I go from my office
to the kitchen, desperately looking for a cup of coffee, she grabs three of
her favorite toys, piles them together, wags her tail-a clear invitation to
play. I promised her this morning I would make good...we had a nice early
morning walk. Never even thought of this happening, but an airborne bird
overhead decided to do its business and we heard a little splat about five
feet ahead of us. What if that had hit me on the head? I would have had to
use a whole bottle of shampoo. Or Miss Molly. I would have had to throw her
in the washing machine. Life goes on.
