GOOD AFTERNOON: It looks like 2006 will get off to a warm and stormy
start with a chance for severe weather Sunday night and Monday.

ROCKIN’ NEW YEARS EVE: How about that Dick Clark guy? Wow. You will see
him again tonight on ABC3340. As you ring in the New Year overnight, you
should have good weather. Skies will be clear and it will be cool, with
overnight lows fallings into the 40s.

NEW YEARS DAY: Skies will rapidly become cloudy tomorrow as southeasterly
winds begin bringing in Gulf moisture. A warm front will move across the
state Sunday evening. There could be severe storms, including tornadoes
over North Alabama Sunday night along this warm front. It will become
increasingly breezy across the area, especially during the evening hours.
More showers and storms will form after midnight ahead of the cold front,
and some of these could become severe, with the primary threat being large
hail

MONDAY: Showers and storms will be progressing eastward across the state
during the morning hours, likely exiting East Alabama by early afternoon.
Some of these storms will be severe, with the threat for damaging winds and
even possible tornadoes increasing the further east that you go. The SPC
has extreme East Alabama included in a Moderate Risk outlook for severe
weather Monday.

REST OF THE WEEK: Tuesday will be a pretty nice day, but moisture will be
already returning by evening. A front will arrive on Wednesday, bringing a
chance for a few showers, or maybe a storm, but chances do not look to be
very high. Temperatures will return to normal levels for this time of the
year for the end of the week. There will be a slight chance of showers on
Friday as another mostly dry front moves through.

SNOW BOWL: University of Alabama Head Football Coach “Bear” Bryant said
later that the only thing that could have meesed up his team’s chances in
the 1963 Sugar Bowl against Ole Miss in New Orleans would have been if it
were to snow. Well, much to his chagrin, it did snow the night before the
big game in the Crescent City, an amazing 4 ½ inches. Alabama would win the
game by a 12-7 margin. The “New Year’s Eve Snow” in the Deep South dumped
an incredible 15 inches of snow at Meridian, and over 10 inches at Bay. St.
Louis. . Very cold temperatures followed the snowstorm and kept the region
immobilized for days.

FAST FORWARD: To this years’ New Years Day bowls, that won’t be played
on New Years Day. Has that happened before? Auburn takes on Wisconsin
Monday at noon in Orlando’s Capital One Bowl on ABC3340. There is a chance
of showers during the game with temperatures in the upper 70s. Alabama
makes its first trip to the Cotton Bowl since 1982 with a 10:00 a.m. CT
matchup against Texas Tech. It should be sunny with gametime temperatures
warming into the lower 70s.

LATEST TROPICAL STORM? Forming at 12:00 GMT on December 30th, you would
have to imagine that Zeta could be the latest tropical storm ever to form in
the Atlantic.. It just might be. Back in 1954, Alice formed at 12:00 GMT
on December 30th, becoming the latest Atlantic tropical storm ever. So Alice
and Zeta are tentatively tied as the latest storms. We will have to wait on
an official ruling from the Commissioner’s Office. Alice was a tropical
storm until January 6, 1955, making it also the earliest Atlantic tropical
storm ever. It is interesting to note that U.S. Weather Bureau forecasters
had already retired their 1954 list of names. Back then, they used the same
list over and over. The December Alice was officially 1955’s first named
storm.

There had already been an Alice in June 1954. December Alice would go on to
become a hurricane, moving through the Leeward Islands on January 2, 1955.
