CAN'T GET MUCH BETTER THAN THIS: Two weeks ago today we were rushing to get
ready for Hurricane Ivan who came ashore very early on September 16 and the
rest is history on what we had that Thursday. Now, we're experiencing
weather on the opposite end of the totem pole and it could hardly be better.
Only thing...we're beginning to seriously need some rain. We have gone
almost two weeks without a drip. The cooler air that spread southward
overnight brought some nice cool temperatures this morning. A few examples:

51 in Hartselle
52 in Decatur and Meridianville
54 in Ft. Payne
55 in Cullman, Moulton, Little River Canyon
56 in Pinson and DeSoto State Park
59 in Anniston and Birmingham
62 in Tuscaloosa

RACE WEEKEND: It's that time again over at the Talladega Super Speedway. The
only chance of rain will probably be later Saturday. The chance is so small
that we almost took it out of the forecast. Few, if any, showers are
expected and this will be followed by sunny and cooler weather on Sunday.
Meanwhile, we also expect dry weather Thursday and Friday. We will have
football weather in tomorrow's editions.

ROAMING FAR AND WIDE: With all the tropical weather out of the way, we will
try to catch up on some other stories next week. With the assistance of a
gentleman from the University of Montevallo we are going to try to estimate
how much the rain weighed that fell on Alabama during one of the recent
tropical systems...in Jeanne's last gasp, she dumped 4.14 inches of rain on
New York City in the last 24 hours and 5.70 inches at Wilmington, Del., and
Nantucket, Massachusetts. About 2.50 inches fell on Boston, Harrisburg, Pa.,
and the nation's capitol...24 at Hibbing, Minnesota was the coldest in the
lower 48 this morning...in Alaska it was an even zero at appropriately named
Arctic Village...it will be around 25 tonight around Aspen and Vail,
Colorado with snow showers. Even Denver may get a mix of rain and snow
Friday night...on this date in 1965, 16.85 inches of rain caused $25 million
in flood damage at Mobile. It was because Tropical Storm Debbie was
approaching the coast.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly rang the miniature cowbell on
the back doorknob early last night. She sounded like Avon calling. I quickly
went walking with her because I wanted to see the second installment of the
harvest moon. Nature never disappoints. The big moon was peaking in and out
of a broken layer of altocumulus clouds at about 10,000 feet. The Old Crow
Motel looked like a Thomas Kinkade painting back lighted by the moon and
clouds. That old dilapidated tree will never make the cover of Outdoor
Alabama, a beautiful magazine that I have subscribed to for years. I wished

I had my trusty 26-year-old Nikon with me last night. We saw a freshly
constructed spider web hanging from the lower limbs of a tree. It made a
pretty scene as it glistened in the back light of the moon. A one-minute
time exposure would have made a great picture. When Molly took me walking
this morning it was full speed ahead. Sometimes I call that little girl,
NASCAR Molly. Life goes on at greatly variable speeds. We love life at any
speed!
