...Drier Air Works Into Alabama Today...

ONLY ISOLATED SHOWERS TODAY: Following two days of strong
thunderstorms and heavy downpours, drier air slips into the northern
half of Alabama today. Dewpoints will drop into the mid 60s, and the
drier means that many communities will be rain-free through the day.
Any showers or thunderstorms that form this afternoon will be very
widely spaced, and the best chance of showers will be over the
southern counties. With a good supply of sunshine, temperatures should
reach the low 90s this afternoon, near average values for mid to late
July in Alabama. The lower humidity will make the day somewhat
comfortable for mid-summer.

THE DAYS AHEAD: Moisture levels will slowly rise tomorrow and over the
weekend, putting our state in a routine summer weather pattern for the
weekend. Partly sunny days along with the chance of scattered showers
and storms during the peak of the daytime heating process. Afternoon
highs will be in the 90 to 95 degree range through Sunday. The setup
should remain generally the same into early next week, and we still
see no sign of any long lasting, excessive heat wave for Alabama
through mid-August. Sure looks like the summer of 2008 will be
considerably "cooler" than the summer of 2007. Nobody is complaining
about that…

TOPIC: TROPICS: Dolly slammed into the far southern Texas coast
yesterday packing sustained winds of 100 mph, and bringing heavy rain
and flooding to places like Brownsville, Harlingen, and McAllen. The
system is now a tropical storm, and will continue to bring the threat
of flash flooding over far South Texas today. Dolly will finally rain
herself out over the mountains of northern Mexico by the weekend, but
some of the moisture could wind up over the Southwest U.S., helping to
enhance their monsoon season that is now in progress. Rain totals from
yesterday and last night included 6.29" at Brownsville, 3.55" at
Harlingen, and 2.26" at McAllen.

Elsewhere, a well organized tropical wave is in the eastern Atlantic,
several hundred miles west of the Cape Verde Islands. Development of
this system in the short term is not expected due to cool ocean water.
And, most likely this wave will be recurving out over the open
Atlantic before reaching the Caribbean Islands or the U.S. mainland.

MORE SUMMER SOAKERS: Rain totals from yesterday included 1.46" at
Weaver, 1.20" at Pelham, 1.11" at Troy, 1.05" at Weaver, and .93" at
Montgomery. Nickel sized hail was reported with the storm at Weaver,
in Calhoun County north of Anniston.

THE YEAR WITHOUT A SUMMER: That is how ABC 33/40 Skywatcher Todd Foisy
has described this year; Todd lives in Girdwood, Alaska. Here is his
report from yesterday: "High 48.9/Low 45.0/Current 48.1/Rain 0.82"
Another ridiculously chilly day. A decent amount of new snow above
4000'."
