DRY SUMMER WEATHER: I guess we should start by celebrating some pleasantly
cool temperatures this morning. Selected lows:

57 in DeSoto State Park
58 at Valley Head and Belle Mina
59 at Black Creek, Ft. Payne, Hamilton, Heflin
60 at Cottondale, Russell Cave National Monument
61 in Cullman, Gadsden, Crossville
62 in Jasper, Wedowee, Wadley, Russellville
63 in Cherokee (that's in Colbert County, not
Cherokee County), Anniston
64 in Athens, Ashville, Decatur, Birmingham
65 in Huntsville and Tuscaloosa

Drier air continues to circulate into the state from the NW. By tomorrow,
daytime dew points will be in the mid and upper 50s, which means you will
feel the lower humidity. There's still a chance that a group of
thunderstorms coming out of Arkansas and Oklahoma will move SE. All
indications are that they should turn southward across Louisiana and leave
us dry. Therefore, we have no rain in the forecast all the way into early
next week. Nights will be cool by June standards and highs will be
consistently in the mid 80s. Not bad for June.

LIGHTNING IS FRIGHTENING: A man in his 40s was killed by lightning while
walking on Navarre Beach in NW Florida at 5:30 yesterday afternoon. We can
never overcaution on the dangers of lightning.

TROPICAL WEATHER: A lot of showers and thunderstorms as far down in the
Gulf as you can go. That part is called the Bay of Campeche. It is too close
to land to have a chance for tropical development and upper winds are
expected to become less favorable. The air force recon scheduled for today
has been cancelled.

LOTS OF FACTS IN SHORT NOTES: 113, Death Valley Wednesday...34 this morning
Stanley, Idaho and Yellowstone Park...we can always find colder temperatures
in mostly uninhabited areas...17 degrees this morning at Bishop Pass, Calif.
, elevation 11,972...another inch of rain Orlando brings the two-week total
to 8.74 inches...18.70 inches of rain at Punta Gorda, Fla., so far in June.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: It appeared that my early morning walk with my
little friend Molly would be totally uneventful this morning leaving me
nothing to write about. It was not to be. On the way back down the walking
track, we came within 12 inches of a little baby rabbit who was obviously
crouched stone still to keep Molly from seeing it. When Molly did see it, he
dove headfirst into the hedgerow followed by an airborne Molly. I pulled
Molly back just before she reached it...this is not newsworthy, but a tiny
gnat followed Molly for over 100 yards circling her head. Molly got really
irritated and even slapped at the gnat with her paw. Sure was funny to watch
her...we could feel the lower dew points this morning, but it was still warm
and Molly and I produced a lot of sweatperation...when we get back home,
Molly always expects a treat and then she flattens out on the floor to cool
off and take a nap. She leads the life of Miss Riley. Life goes on.
