THE ALABAMA SITUATION: Seems like our weather has settled into a
pattern that is average for early September. We are also getting into
the time of year that is traditionally our driest, especially the
month of October. We are certainly hoping and praying for a non-
traditional two-month period to help build up the huge rain deficits.
As of today, the deficiency at Birmingham Airport was 17.72 inches.
It will take a mere miracle to erase that by New Year's Eve. A year
ago today, our 2006 rainfall total had reached 42.26 inches—more than
double the amount this year.

We don't look for any big rain events for the rest of the week,
although there could be an increase in the number of showers and
storms by the weekend. There are increasing indications that a front
will try to reach this area early next week. We are looking for high
temperatures between 88 and 93 over the next several days. It can
certainly get hot this time of year. Today in 1925, we had a high
temperature of 105 as a killer heat wave affected the entire state. I
still say that is one of our worst ever. I will try to do a story on
that event on our weather Blog tomorrow.

There were some pleasantly cool temperatures this morning over NE
Alabama with 62 at DeSoto State Park and at Muscadine. Valley Head
had 63, Ft. Payne 64 and Anniston 66.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Vicious Hurricane Felix made landfall in NE
Nicaragua today as a Category 5. He was going downhill rapidly this
afternoon, but still producing major problems with excessive rain.
Winds had dropped to 100 mph. He will continue across Honduras,
Guatemala and Southern Mexico, probably producing life-threatening
flash floods and mudslides. A low-pressure area midway between
Bermuda and the NE coast of Florida continued to show some signs of
organization. Could be a tropical or sub-tropical cyclone over the
next couple of days. Movement is erratic.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: 121 in Death Valley was the hottest yesterday.
37 at Leadville, Colorado and Lake Yellowstone was the lowest this
morning. A sign of the season: it was 32 on Mt. Washington, New
Hampshire with 60 mph winds along with freezing drizzle and freezing
fog. More heavy rain in parts of South and Central Texas today. San
Antonio has received 44.70 inches this year, an excess of 23 inches.
Houston is 18 wetter than normal.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Sorry there was no Molly story
yesterday. Ran out of space, but I did hear about it. That little
girl seems totally bewildered. Last night we had our great grandson
for spend-the-night along with three grandchildren, daughter and son-
in-law and the majority owner. The great grandson is a little baby
and Little Miss Molly loves little children. I believe she has walked
three miles just inside the house yesterday trying to check out
everybody and everything. She walked up to the little baby this
morning and gently kissed him on the cheek. The little baby grabbed
Molly's paw and they seemed to be bonding. Molly would lay down
beside the baby as if to protect her. When I got up at 5 this
morning, I accidentally kicked Little Miss Molly in the head. It did
not hurt her, but she sure looked surprised. Those things happen when
you have a houseful of people. I believe Little Miss Molly has lost
about ½ pound, because she is constantly on the move and the
grandkids run with her a lot. That means that she may be down to 8
and ½ pounds. Life goes on and is always interesting......
