THE ALABAMA STORY: On this Labor Day 2007, a lot of us weather
people are working. After all, there is weather 24 hours a day and
365 days a year. I have worked more holidays than I have been off,
but I cannot complain because I am so thankful to have had a job in
weather for all these many years. It is an occupation that I never
dreaded going to work.

Back to the situation at hand, drier air has pushed down into North
Alabama. This will lead to some slightly cooler nights, but not
sweater weather, by any means. It was a pleasant 62 this morning in
DeSoto State Park and 64 at Ft. Payne Airport. Lows over the north
half of the state tonight should be mostly in the 60s. With the drier
air, afternoons will heat up a bit, but the humidity will be lower,
especially tomorrow. This is one of those weather situations where
there is going to be some risk of a shower or thunderstorm over the
south half of the state for the next several days. Here in Central
Alabama, we cannot absolutely rule out one each day, but we have left
them out of the forecast for tomorrow. Our better chance will
probably be next Friday.

Early this morning, a cluster of showers and thunderstorms developed
in West/Central Alabama, mostly south of the Tuscaloosa area. Radar
estimates indicated more than 2 inches of rain over NW Hale County.
Those showers took their time moving south and were over the SW part
of the state this afternoon.

TROPICAL WEATHER: It is all about Felix today. He continues to be an
extremely dangerous hurricane, but not especially large. He was
moving westward and had temporarily dropped to a Category 4.
Sustained winds this afternoon were 145 mph. Felix was moving west at
21 mph. The latest official track forecast continues to imply that
the USA will not be affected, although moisture may reach parts of
Texas and New Mexico by early next week. The track carries Felix near
the north coast of Honduras tomorrow and across Northern Guatemala
Wednesday and eventually into Mexico. There is a possibility he will
not emerge over the extreme south part of the Bay of Campeche.
Elsewhere in the Tropics, a well-defined low-pressure area midway
between Africa and the Lesser Antilles, has some potential. A broad
area of low pressure about 200 miles east of Savannah has the
potential for slow development as it drifts eastward.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: A bit surprised to see the temperature at 110
below zero at Vostok, Antarctica today. It is expected to drop
further to 115 below. The Antarctic is getting very late in the
winter season. Back in the USA, the coldest this morning was 32 at
Stanley, Idaho. The hottest yesterday was 122 in Death Valley.
Between 1 and 2 inches of rain fell at Jacksonville, Savannah and
Tallahassee during the last 24 hours......
