...Miserable Day..

This is the definition of a miserable day. The day started off gray
and windy with a thermometer that was still in freefall in the rear of
last evening's cold front. Most areas were in the 30s this morning.
A thick covering of stratocumulus clouds covers the state at the noon
hour. Slow clearing was starting to take place, but the mercury will
struggle to make it back to 40 degrees this afternoon because of the
clouds and strong cold air advection. Wind advisories are in effect
for the northwest winds that are averaging 15-25 mph and occasionally
gusting higher.

FIRE DANGER HIGH: The windy conditions and low dewpoints along with
the dry fuel conditions lead to a high danger of wildfire today across
the area. Outdoor burning should be avoided and any flame source
should be handled with extreme caution. Winds should lessen on Monday.

COLD TONIGHT: The mercury will fall into the middle 20s generally
across the area tonight. Some of the normally colder locations could
see the lower 20s, so keep that in mind if you have pets or property
that are cold sensitive.

THROUGH MIDWEEK: By tomorrow, the U.S. will be in a zonal upper
level pattern, meaning that the flow will be basically west to east
with no big troughs or ridges of high pressure. This makes fast
moving, generally weak disturbances rippling along in the flow. One
such disturbance will pass over Alabama Tuesday night into Wednesday.
This will lead to a slight chance of light showers over Alabama
Tuesday night into Wednesday. A slightly stronger system will impact
Alabama on Thursday, with a chance of showers and maybe a storm.
Rainfall amounts look bleak with the first system, and perhaps not
much better with the second. The GFS model is still advertising a
better rain system during the weekend, but has delayed the inset of
the rain to late Saturday night. Still some chance of strong storms
with this system.

HOLIDAY WEEK: After the weekend system, there could be a little
wraparound moisture early on Christmas Eve morning, with the
possibility of a few snow flurries over the north. Another rain
system is through of the 26th, followed by another on the 29th.

ON THIS DATE IN 1869: Wisconsin Congressman Halbert Paine introduced
a bill calling for the creation of a national telegraphic weather
service administered by the military. Paine had been approached by
Professor Increase Lapham of Milwaukee, a successful scientist,
businessman and civil engineer who saw the potential benefit of a
warning system for mariners on the Great Lakes. 1869 had been an
especially terrible year on the Great Lakes with nearly 2000
shipwrecks that year. Although many of the prominent meteorologists
of the day wanted the weather service to be under civilian control,
Paine felt that it was a project that required military discipline.
Paine, a retired Union Army General also wanted the service to be run
by General Albert Myer, who was chief of the Army Signal Office and
had good political connections. So Myer began putting the plan
together and the following February, President Grant signed the bill
into law.
