GOOD AFTERNOON: Spent the morning working on my presentation for the Storm Xtreme weather seminar. I will be talking my 2004 storm chasing experiences. You will have the rare opportunity to receive basic and advanced storm spotter training all in the same day. Learn the clues that will help you identify potentially deadly tornadoes before they form. ItÂs training that might save your life, or prepare you for the exciting and rewarding opportunity to be a part of the network of storm spotters that are the eyes and ears of the National Weather Service. ItÂs all two weeks from today at the BJCC.
CHILLY START THIS MORNING: Temperatures fell into the 40s in most locations across Central Alabama. Readings actually rose during the pre-dawn hours at some locations thanks to some cloud cover that rolled across that area. Areas that were clear the longest, including southern sections turned out to be the coolest. Some state overnight low readings included:
43 at Troy
41 at Brewton
38 at Greenville
41 at Thomasville
40 at Jackson
39 at Fort Payne
44 at the Birmingham Airport
40 in Pinson
FOR THE REMAINDER OF YOUR WEEKEND: The cloudiness over North Alabama is being caused by a trough of low pressure that extends down into the state. The trough has pushed a weak cold front down into North Central Alabama, but it is barely noticeable. The front will stall and start to move back north on Sunday as a warm front. Readings tonight will drop into the lower 50s across the area. We will continue under a northwesterly flow aloft compliments of the trough through early tomorrow, when the trough will lift out to the northeast and allow the upper flow to become more zonal, or west to east.
LOOKING AHEAD: A fairly strong upper high Is forecast to develop over the Gulf of Mexico, which will keep subsequent fronts from sweeping through Alabama. But the high will be far enough east to allow some southwesterly upper winds over the state, which means increased clouds and a slight chance of showers, with slightly above normal readings for the week ahead. A front will give us a fairly good chance of showers and thunderstorms on Tuesday. Skies should remain partly cloudy on Wednesday, but a little more sunshine will appear on Thursday. Another front will try to approach the area on Friday, increasing that rain chances just a tad again.
ON THIS DATE IN 1991: A major wildfire across eastern Washington and northern Idaho caused $8 million in damage in the Spokane and Coeur dAlene area. Two people died. The wildfire resulted from a moderate windstorm that downed power lines during extremely dry conditions.
