GOOD AFTERNOON: If you said that Hurricane Wilma was but a shadow of her
former record breaking self this afternoon, that would be an accurate
statement. But it would not accurately portray the relentless pounding that
Wilma has been delivering to the Yucatan Peninsula. I don't have the
benefit of any official observations, but I would not be surprised to find
out that the island of Cozumel has been experiencing hurricane force winds
since early Friday morning. Hopefully, that will end soon.

THE ALABAMA WEATHER STORY: A clearing line is advancing southeastward
across Alabama. Expect a clear, chilly night tonight. We will see a few
30s in colder locations tonight, along with some scattered frost, but most
places will be in the 40s. Cold air stratocumulus clouds will be plentiful
on Sunday, but there will be some sunshine. Look for temperatures to rise
into the middle to upper 60s at most locations. Another front will bring a
reinforcing shot of cold air late on Sunday. This front will be accompanied
by low clouds as well as sprinkle or two and some stronger northerly winds.
Those winds may keep a widespread frost from happening Sunday night, but
temperatures will be cold with 30s and 40s commonplace. Monday night will
be cold also. Cooler than normal weather should prevail the rest of the
week.

BACK TO WILMA: Now we get ready for Act II of Wilma's traveling road show.
The hurricane has weakened a good bit, but still is packing a Category Two
punch as it gets ready to emerge back over the Gulf of Mexico. Wilma will
strengthen somewhat as it turns to the northeast ahead of the developing
upper level trough over the eastern United States. Look for Wilma to
reclaim her major hurricane status tonight or tomorrow. Wilma should
encounter increasing wind shear over the southeastern Gulf and should be
weakening as it approaches the Florida Peninsula. Landfall will come Monday
morning over SW Florida. At that time, Wilma should be a Category Two
hurricane with max winds around 105 mph. We can't rule out that it might be
a Category Three storm then. It will accelerate northeastward, crossing the
Peninsula in just three or four hours and racing out over the open Atlantic.
The Atlantic version of Wilma will be a formidable storm.

AND NOW: We knew this was going to be an active hurricane season. It
became quickly apparent that we might have a record breaking season. And it
appears that the all time record for tropical storms will be broken shortly
when TD 25 becomes Tropical Storm Alpha in the Central Caribbean. How many
letters are there in the Greek alphabet? Just checking.TD25/TS Alpha will
cross the island of Hispaniola (Haiti/Dominican Republic) on Sunday then
over the islands of the southeastern Bahamas Sunday night. It will be
interesting to see the interaction between Wilma, the big trough and this
system.

TWO ALABAMA CLIMATE NOTES: Back in 1884, this was the final day of a two
month rainless spell at Tuscaloosa AL that lasted from August 28 through
October 22nd comes to an end as Southeast suffers through terrible drought.
And in 1987, 23 degrees at Pinson and 28 at the Birmingham Airport are
both the coldest readings on record for so early in the season.
