...Hot as a Firecracker...

The weather in Alabama on the Fourth of July is supposed to be hot, and you
sure won't be disappointed this year. Temperatures again today will rise
into the 95 to 99 degree category statewide, about five to eight degrees
above normal for early July. The day will feature lots of hazy sunshine, and
by early afternoon showers and storms will begin to form in the summer heat.

Like recent days, the afternoon storms should be widely spaced; the chance
of any one spot getting wet today is about one in five. Most of the storms
will be over by fireworks time tonight.

SOME HEAT RELIEF AHEAD: During the mid-week period, we expect to see the
coverage of afternoon showers and storms going up, and afternoon
temperatures going down. The best coverage of scattered showers and storms
most likely will come on Thursday. Then, drier air slips into North Alabama
with little if any chance of rain Friday through the weekend. Humidity
values should be lower at the end of the weeks, and nights a little cooler.
There is a chance many communities will fail to reach 90 degrees on both
Thursday and Friday afternoon.

TROPICAL UPDATE: The Atlantic basin features a few scattered areas of
convection, but the overall pattern does not favor any tropical storm
formation during the next few days.

ONE YEAR AGO: Tropical depression four formed in the Caribbean; this would
later become Hurricane Dennis, making landfall at Santa Rosa Island, Florida

(east of Pensacola) on July 10 as a category 3 storm.

YESTERDAY'S HEAT: Both Tuscaloosa and Calera reached 99 degrees yesterday.
Anniston's official high was 97, while the high at the Birmingham Airport
was 96.
