ALABAMA ONE CALL
KNOW WHAT'S BELOW
CALL 811 BEFORE YOU DIG

Whether planning to do it yourself or hire a professional excavator,
smart digging means calling 811 before each job to find out where
it's safe to dig.

Every digging project requires a call to Alabama One Call--even
small projects like building a fence, planting shrubs and trees or
installing a mailbox.

One free easy call to 811 or 205-252-4444 at least 48 hours
prior to digging:

* Gets utility owned lines marked for free!
* Complies with Alabama Act 94-487.
* Helps prevent undesired consequences and possible service
disruptions to your neighborhood.

...A Good Soaking...

WET IS THE WORD: Beneficial rain is likely for much of Alabama during
the next 48 hours as a wave of low pressure moves along a stalled
front over Central Alabama. Periods of rain are likely today, with the
rain becoming more widespread tonight and tomorrow. A few
thunderstorms could be involved tomorrow, but severe thunderstorms are
not expected with a stable airmass in place. Flooding is not expected
to be an issue since the rain won't be extremely heavy at any one
given time. Many Alabama communities will see two inches of rain
between now and Sunday morning, with isolated amounts to three inches.

The rain should begin to move out of here Sunday morning, and some
clearing is possible by Sunday afternoon as drier air arrives. Next
week looks very nice, with mostly dry conditions and seasonal
temperatures. Afternoon highs will be mostly in the 70s, with early
morning lows in the 40s and 50s.

AT THE BEACH: Lots of questions about weather on the Gulf Coast in
coming days with a number of Alabama school kids in spring break next
week. For today, tomorrow, and Sunday, the sky will be mostly cloudy
with a good chance of showers and a few thunderstorms. Afternoon highs
will be in the 65 to 70 degree range, and the sea water temperatures
along the Central Gulf Coast are running in the mid 60s. A few showers
will remain possible on Monday, but the rest of the week looks dry. On
the immediate coast, highs will remain in the upper 60s due to the
influence of the cooler ocean water, but temperatures inland will
reach the 70s.

GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAINS: If you are headed to Gatlinburg, expect a
soaking, chilly rain today, tomorrow and Sunday with afternoon highs
in the 45 to 50 degree range. A few lingering showers are possible
Monday, but Tuesday and Wednesday will be dry with highs in the 50s. A
few scattered showers could return by Thursday.

ON THIS DATE IN 1993: The great Blizzard of 93 was winding down across
Alabama, but the storm was still raging up the Atlantic coast.
Birmingham's official snow total was 13 inches… tremendous snowfall
amounts occurred in the Appalachians. Mount Leconte in Tennessee
recorded an incredible 60 inches. Mount Mitchell in North Carolina was
not far behind with 50 inches. Practically every official weather
station in West Virginia set a new 24 hour record snowfall. Further to
the north, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania measured 25 inches, Albany, New
York checked in with 27 inches, and Syracuse, New York was buried
under 43 inches. Boston recorded a gust to 81 mph, the highest wind
gust at the location since hurricane Edna in 1954. Numerous cities in
the south and mid Atlantic states recorded their lowest barometric
pressure ever as the storm bottomed out at 960 millibars (28.35
inches) over Chesapeake Bay. 208 people were killed by the storm and
total damage was estimated at 6 billion dollars -- the costliest
extratropical storm in history.
