...Cold Air Returns To Alabama...

A CHILLY DECEMBER DAY: Yesterday's official daytime high in Birmingham was 63 degrees; we figure temperatures today will be about 20 degrees colder as Polar air drops into Alabama, coming the vast snow pack to the north. Tonight promises to be one of the coldest nights so far this season; we are projecting a low of 25 degrees, but some of the colder spots across North Alabama will be closer to 20, maybe even reaching the upper teens. During the day tomorrow our weather stays dry, but clouds will increase and temperatures will stay cold, with a high in the mid 40s.

WET WEEKEND: Yet another impulse in the southern branch of the jet stream will bring rain to Alabama as the weekend begins. A cold rain will begin tomorrow night, and we have some concern there could be a window for some freezing rain during the early morning hours Saturday. Freezing rain is simply liquid precipitation that falls when surface temperatures are at or below 32 degrees, this in turn produces ice on exposed surfaces. While we don't expect a serious problem for now, just be aware there could be a little light bridge icing early Saturday morning, especially north of Birmingham.

The rest of the weekend will be wet with periods of rain Saturday and Sunday. Saturday will be a raw, cold, and wet day with a high only in the 40s, but we should reach the 50s Sunday as a southerly flow takes over. Rain totals over the weekend should be in the one-half to one inch range, and we don't expect any problems with severe weather this time.

NEXT WEEK: We will have a brief break from the rain on Monday, but the next system promises to bring another round of rain to the state by Tuesday and Tuesday night. Colder air follows on Wednesday and Thursday.

DIGGING OUT: Wisconsin declared a state of emergency yesterday, shut down government offices and also activated the National Guard after the epic storm system dumped up to 17 inches of snow across the state. The state of Iowa was also pretty much shut down, at times visibility was near zero yesterday morning with blowing snow and sub-zero wind chill index readings. Snow plows were pulled off the roads for part of the day because visibility was so poor and the storm was so bad that they weren't making much of a difference. Even the military Humvees were having trouble, and large truck drivers were also getting stuck in the snow. A man who was found behind the post office in Yale, Iowa died en route to hospital. He had been there for at least a couple hours.

ACROSS THE FROZEN TUNDRA: Coldest place in the nation yesterday was the community of Sixth Crossing, Wyoming with 37 degrees below zero. That is considerably colder than Alaska's coldest temperature of 14 below, recorded at Northway. Fargo, North Dakota never saw zero yesterday; their high was -2.
