...Cloudy Start...
GOOD MORNING: Nineteen named storms so far in this extremely busy North
Atlantic Hurricane Season. And we still have over seven weeks to go. Some
interesting facts about the season so far in this weekend's forecast
packages. Like the fact that only three times have there ever been two Cat
Five hurricanes in the same year.
IN THE TROPICS: There is activity in the tropical Atlantic this morning,
but nothing is threatening to become serious at this time. There is a low
over the eastern Gulf of Mexico, but it shows no signs of becoming a
tropical cyclone for now. There is a tropical wave east of the Windward
Islands, but any development of this system would be slow to occur. Look
for what is currently a non-tropical low northeast of the Leeward Islands to
gradually become a subtropical and perhaps a tropical storm as it moves
northwestward. In either case, it would be Vince, the twentieth named
storm. The GFS develops it into a formidable system by late in the week.
By Friday, it could be a real wind maker just east of Cape Cod. It could
affect eastern Maine.
OUR WEATHER: Cloudy start to the day with wraparound clouds around a low
over the Carolinas. There could be a little light rain this morning, but
sunshine should emerge by afternoon, over western sections first.
Seasonably cool conditions tonight will be followed by nice conditions for
much of the coming week.
FOOTBALL FORECAST: SMU will be at Legion Field to play UAB this evening.
It should be about 65 at kick off cooling to the upper 50s by the end of the
game. Dry weather.
ON THIS DATE IN 1837: The remnants of Racer's Storm moved off the South
Carolina coast and headed back into the open Atlantic where it intensified.
Off Cape Hatteras, the paddlewheeler Home was sunk. There were only two
life preservers onboard, a tragedy that prompted Congress to make the law
requiring all American boats to have one life preserver onboard for every
passenger.
