...More Rain Early In The Week...

A TOUCH OF SEPTEMBER: When I stepped outside early this morning to
pick up my most valued morning paper and again at midday to get the
mail, I took an ultra deep breath of nice fresh air. I briefly closed
my eyes and had a flashback to DeSoto Falls and DeSoto State Park, a
drive up the Paint Rock River valley or sitting on the deck at the
restaurant at Mt. Cheaha State Park and looking at all the autumn
scenery. Then I slapped myself and now I am back to reality, so we
will discuss the weather at hand.

Yes, yes, yes, I know 63 percent of you (my estimate) love summer
better than any other time. I respect your opinion. But at least there
was a nice touch of September this morning and our relatively
comfortable temperatures will continue through the weekend. Indeed,
the dew point (one of our main indicators) will stay in the 50s all
day tomorrow when so often in August they are in the 70s. We look for
near total sunshine all of Saturday and most of Sunday. The old
thermometer is going to dip into the upper 50s in some of those
traditional cool spots in NE Alabama
tonight, so enjoy. The weather will do a fairly quick turn around.

NEXT RAIN: Moisture will quickly return to the area. Some models say
a few showers will show up Sunday night. I chose to ignore that, but
there will be a nice return of showers and thunderstorms on Monday,
Tuesday and Wednesday. There is a decent chance that this will be a
good rain event and here in Central Alabama some places may get
between 1 and 2 inches of rain between Monday and Wednesday.

STORMS YESTERDAY: Lots of damage, but no major structural damage. It
was mostly trees and power lines in a number of counties. Some big
rain amounts, too. We list five of the heavier amounts:

1.83 Riverchase at the ABC 33/40 Studios
2.53 Daphne near the coast
3.10 Fairhope
1.60 Scrougout in NE Etowah County
1.43 Bessemer

WEATHER NOTEBOOK: New England and the Northeast are having a very wet
year with frequent intrusions of thunderstorms and even a few
tornadoes and flooding rains. A big glob of thunderstorms moved into
Maine early this morning dumping nearly 4 inches on Durham and 3.20 at
Saco. Numerous roads were closed. Over on the coast, the famous L. L.
Bean complex was taking on water. Hottest temperature in the good old
USA yesterday was again in Death Valley with 119. Chilly spots this
morning were Hibbing, Minnesota with 42 and 35 at several locations in
Alaska.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I am looking for a nice break tonight
and Saturday with no thunderstorms looking over my shoulder. This
evening, I am going to sit down in front of the TV with a pot of
coffee and enjoy the opening of the Olympics. I will be sure and take
Molly on a forced bathroom break before it begins. Then I will cuddle
with her and, during commercial breaks, even have a 3-minute ballgame.
Big ballgame scheduled with her tomorrow.ames was real considerate to
include a Miss Molly category on the 33/40 Blog. I try not to abuse
it, but this will be very special. The loss of a pet is not like a
family member. It is still very hard.
